Uh oh here we go, now people will point out the one time in the last 40 years that a team won without a #1C!
But yeah, center is the most important. More important than any position.

The Blues were an anomaly. Can't be building teams modeled on anomalies.

I understand and mostly agree. But it does disprove the idea.

Yep. it's the "Well we'll get the New jersey 10th OA for Markstrom but we better not be giving up Pospisal too, they can have our late first instead, but I'm hesitant to even give that up" CP fan stuff all over again, lol.

Have you looked at the salary cap lately and percentage of salary to cap? If you think Cozens is being paid like a number one centre at $7.1mil then I'm going to have to ask you to maybe step forward into the present from whatever year you're living in.

What? How often do first line centers hit free agency and on the slim chance one did what are the chances they'd sign in Calgary? You're talking lottery ticket odds, that is not a strategy at all.

Our #1 C is getting paid even less. A lot better production though...

No, not a bum but the elite on that team was his winger.

We have a number two and three centre and then other centres trying to become top 6.

Toews was also a rather underwhelming #1 center for the blackhawks. Probably comparable to O'Reilly lol.

Hard to call a sure fire Hall of Famer an underwhelming centre.
He was the best forward at the 2010 Olympics.
Best comparable is Bergeron.

Frankly IMO Eichel isn't some elite guy either. He's generally around PPG, so a level above a Kadri, but well below Mackinnon or Point or obviously Crosby. He's more like a Scheifele.

He's arguably a top 10 center in the league.
He's a point per game player throughout his career. Johnny Hockey was similar stats wise and we consider him one of the best 2 Flames of all time.
He's a few levels above a Kadri, who is a 2nd line center.

I think that’s a bad take. He’s one of the best centers in the league. Scheifele is a pp merchant.

Eichel also missed a ton of time and had to do some fairly serious rehab iirc. Since joining Vegas, his PPG has gone up every season, and the year they won, he had 20 assists in 22 playoff games. That's pretty elite.

Right now flames have Dylan Larkin level center or potential capable centers.

Well, there can be more than one elite player on a team.
I think Backstrom is widely underrated. He was elite. Heard Bruce Beadreau on the Sheet with Jeff Marek recently say Backstrom was his favourite player of all the players he coached in his career. He did it all and without much doubt helped Ovechkin get to where he is. It wouldn’t be surprising he puts up more points than Barkov when it’s all said and done. Is Barkov elite?
Any player that plays 1C on a cup winning team should be considered elite in my mind. There’s no higher accomplishment.
