Is Gentile the guy who co-hosts the Athletic Hockey Podcast with Haley Salvian? Then yes, he really is a Flames hater. Had to stop listening to that pod because of him (or whoever the host is if not him)

I am still puzzled why Philly did this. I don't see Kuzmenko at all as a Torts type of player, he'll probably be in the dog house soon lol. GM Briere is out to lunch.

Agreed. I could see Frost signing a deal similar to Sharangovich with the Flames, so Philly would probably be saving around $10M.

With larger, more complicated trades, I always find that it provides clarity to break it down into pieces:
Farabee ($5M) for Kuzmenko ($5.5M) + 2nd
The math works, but let's be honest, if anyone proposed this, they would get shredded for being a homer. This is a pretty big win for the Flames.
Frost ($2.1M) for Pelletier ($.8M) + 7th.
I love Pelletier, and I love what he brings. But we need a C, and Frost is a pretty good one. Again, if anyone proposes that we offer Pelletier straight up for Frost (okay, we'll throw in a 7th), they're getting mocked for being a homer.
Both halves of this trade are clear wins for the Flames. They are a better team today than yesterday. And by a fair margin, IMO.

This seems risky due to Farabee's contract and the fact that they'll have to re-sign Frost at year end with limited info. I'm not as concerned about Frost really but that Farabee hit is rough to take on if he doesn't become better than essentially a 4th liner.
These guys seem like the epitome of "I feel like they're good but they're not actually very good".

This is a good point. Last year everyone was drooling over Kuzmenko and this year he is in the dog house. They're going to have to re-sign these guys based on limited showing which can backfire easily. But even if it does, giving up Pelletier and Kuzmenko is a nothing burger.

The Flames got a natural centre and improved on the wing. They gave up an expiring contract and a middle 6 winger with not a lot of offensive upside and didn't sacrifice any first round picks nor did they use up a retention spot or take on a bad contract.
People here should write for the Athletic. We actually watch the team.

I don't think cap space is going to be an issue for the Flames for the remainder of Farabee's deal. Even if he can't step up and be a top 6 guy, it's not a contract that'll hurt them.

Although we are biased, the Toffoli, Lindholm and Kuzmenko trades are clear wins (although we weren't sure about the Toffoli trade at first). Conroy has shown he has an eye for undervalued talent.
|
To see the Lindholm trade as anything other than a clear triumph is to live in a delulu-reality.

4th liner?
Over the last 5 years, he has 82 goals in 332 games - that is a 20 goal per season pace. That's a hell of a 4th liner.
He got a $5M contract for a reason (14OA, scores goals, plays with grit). He is not even close to being a 4th liner.

Over the same term, Coleman's numbers:
346 games, 90 goals, 21 goal per season pace.
Fourth liner!

There is almost no risk. The Flames were never going to go on the UFA market to spend that money in the next couple years. They have so much cap space that his 5 million bucks does not affect their ability to sign their young RFAs that they need to sign. The year Farabee’s contract is up is the first year that the Flames will have any RFAs out side of Coronato, Wolf and Zary to sign as that will be the year the new Parekh contract likely kicks in.
IMO the Flames have a unique window in the next 3 years to take flyers on guys like Farabee. If they did not have him the money likely would not have been spent and having him does not inhibit their flexibility to sign the guys they need to sign.

Yup, that’s him! He always sounds put out when someone asks him to talk about something Flames related.

Because they had a fight once? He's a pro, I'm sure it will be fine. If anything I bet it fires him up, the shot in the arm that Conroy referred to for a playoff push.

What an incredible trade. I swear I heard Frost's name being tossed around during the summer and sure enough it must have been Dissentowner's post that brought it up. Where's that poster who was crapping on him about throwing darts at a board? Crow time.
I fail to see how this trade is anything but a win. Kuzmenko was always going to be a trade 'n' dump. He knew it, the org knew it, the fans knew it. But to go to a Torts team? Thank you Briere for seeing whatever you saw in him, but will be interesting to follow the Flyers this season and see if he's in the doghouse by Valentine's day.
Really going to miss Pelts. Honestly saw him being here long-term. His energy and attitude was infectious and seems like he brought swagger to the team since the day he arrived. His effect on Huberdeau can't be understated either. Really going to miss him and hope he reaches his potential wherever he plays.
Conroy very clearly an EA NHL gamer, as the classic 7th rounder a few years out is a move literally ever NHL gamer has made at some point and succeeded with. I burst out lolling when I saw it was a '28 pick. Nothing against Flyer fans, but hilarious seeing their reaction to that pick.
Still blows my mind that with the tear down that has happened over the past year, the team is in a wildcard spot, Wolf is playing at an elite level, the team shows up pretty much every night AND they trade for 2 young players with room to grow. Unreal. Both coach and GM looking like geniuses right now. Hard to justify being on team-tank (which I was for most of the season) when we get a fun season and solid GM'ing like this right now. Going to simply sit back and enjoy the ride for the next few months. Conroy continuing to show why he's deserving to be on the list of most influential Calgarians!
