That's fine, but it's simply not going to work, and sooner or later they're going to have to come to grips with the fact that they have a bad roster and a relatively weak prospect pool. There's no silver lining here. It's going to end up with them picking high either now or later.

That Jack Eichel guy was pretty good. I heard he won a cup.
The Sabres have a lot of good young players too. Dahlin and Powers should be good defenders for years. Byram and Thompson are pretty good assets as well.
The Flames would kill to have those kinds of assets on defense right now.

Giving Montreal the 12th overall pick next year should be a goal that all aspire to I guess.

Well one of them (Eichel) won a Cup last year and another (Reinhart) might win a Cup this year. So they did achieve success with their rebuild, just not in Buffalo.

Oh I completely agree, anyone can see how dumb our ownership group is a mile away. It makes complete sense that we would be going all in for the playoffs with 3 NHL caliber defensemen currently on the roster (with 2 signed).
Make it make sense though. This team needs a blow up badly.

Same could be said for Calgary then, when Bennett and Tkachuk win it?

Seems as though making high picks isn't such a bad idea.

I never said that it was a bad idea. We’ll be making another high pick next year and probably the year after that. I do like how the Flames did it last time though. Just would’ve done a few things differently.

Hah, I wasn't suggesting you meant otherwise.
IMO the Flames should be gunning to make multiple first-round picks in 2024, 2025, 2026, and maybe 2027. Start to pull out of things in 2027 and make the playoffs again around 2028-29ish.

And the mishandling of Bennett really pisses me off. And no, I’m not letting it go.

I would be fine with them blowing it up, I am not opposed to a rebuild myself but try convincing ownership and the vet players of that. I get it, we are all sick of the team being in the mushy middle.

I won’t lie, I do hope they’re in the playoffs sooner than that. Ideally, they hit on some of their later draft picks this year, and a couple of them are ready for 27-28. Just in time to play with Mckenna and get into the playoffs.

But, we want the playoffs..... NOW!!!
Realistically, playoffs should not even be in the discussion for the next few years. We shouldn't be making any short term decisions at all.
Kuzmenko... gone next deadline.
Bread... gone next deadline.
Necas... hang up the phone.
Coleman wants to go to a contender? Find him a team.
We aren't going to be a contender for years.

It is such an obvious timeline (to me at least). Trying to do anything other than finish bottom ten next year is a borderline disaster. Imagine going into a re-tool, or a rebuild or a re-whatever and picking 9th and then 29th the next year and not making the playoffs either year. Your team still probably sucks and you are picking down with the conference finalists. Brad literally gave the Flames a gift, a real incentive to tank for a year to get a high pick. The decision on whether to try to tank next year could literally be worth 20+ positions in the first round.

I don’t think you’ll have to worry about that next year. Not unless Conroy pulls a Houdini act on the backend.

I hope we make our picks this year, rather than trade them for already established NHL players over the age of 22…

If they traded for Necas and used their cap space to sign a couple of the veteran UFA dmen and kept the rest of their players from last year they could finish outside the top 10 pick for sure. Not playoffs but outside the top 10. A team of
Huberdeau Zary Necas
Sharangovich Kadri Kuzmenko
Coleman Backlund Mangiapane
Pospisil Rooney Coronato
Weegar Miromanov
Edmundson Anderson
Kylington Tanev
Markstrom
Vladar
That team would not be a slam dunk to finish bottom 10. Would not make the playoffs IMO but would not be a slam dunk to finish bottom 10.

What would the point of all this be? If we finish 11th or 12th last instead, we lose our first round pick.

I think they'd be battling for a wild card. It's a team that would hang with the Blues, Kraken, Coyotes, Wild and whoever else is in the middle.
As you said probably not a bottom 10 team. So we'd be drafting 11th-19th with a shot at playoffs.
We'd be an easy out for a serious contender and would have next to no chance of winning a cup for the next 5-10 years because we're sitting in the middle.
