I bet Johnny and Matty would have stayed had COVID not happened.

Don't think we'll see border travel shut down like that again during their hockey careers. I don't think it will be an issue.
It's just interesting to see 5/6 UFAs exit with Backlund likely joining them without the offer of captaincy.
The outlook of the team probably factored in more than fears instilled by covid, but funny enough if the UFA d-men stuck around this group probably remains competitive.
They were chugging along pretty well. They just needed to drop Lindholm who was a hindrance to the offense.

I think they would have stayed if we beat the Oilers and taken a few games off the Avs.

We can hope not. But we were all very forcefully reminded that the border is there and can be closed. I don't think anyone who lived through it is likely to forget that.
Freedom to travel between the U.S. and Canada is no longer something we can just take for granted.

Cliff Pu likely never would have played a game for us either.
I'd rather have the guy that ended up being worth two 2nd round picks when he was traded from Carolina to New York.
And then won a Norris trophy on his ELC.

Yeah I suppose. Hard to know what that would've felt like as a Canadian.
It sucks to see the Flames inordinately affected by the outcome of that though. Too many key players that were family-oriented Americans.

As a Canadian living in the US during Covid it really sucked. The 2 week quarantine on this side, and no clarity if they would let me back in to the US for the first 14 months was worse (my Visa type was not listed as one that they were permitting).
For young guys that are super tight with their parents like JG and MT, I totally get their concern.

Um. Everyone. Because its nonsense.
Hanifin wanted to go to Boston or Tampa to 'be close to home.' Well. Now he's in Vegas.
He absolutely screwed the Flames by publicly announcing his preferred destinations because those destinations are barren of assets and so any other destination knows they're probably getting a rental and as such the price goes down.
If he wanted to be 'honourable' he'd have submitted his 8-team list and then he and his Agent would STFU until the deal was done and then when he's a Free Agent in the Summer they can say whatever they want.

A friend of mine who used to play in the NHL and has contacts at various teams is of the view Covid is the primary reason Johnny left.

Meh. He's gone and the market wasn't great for a mid pairing defender. Seeya.

That's crazy. So was it because he wanted to be with his family? I know it was hard on some people.

unprotected 1st is a pretty great return, I really don't get why anyone is down on this deal
Most rentals get you a guaranteed late pick, there is a fair chance this is a decent pick IMO.

It’s normal teams would want to talk to him first about his chances of signing with them.
Did you expect him to lie?
If he said nothing teams would assume it’s a rental.
I think the thought he screwed Calgary is blown out of proportion. Calgary got a rental price like you normally do at the deadline.

I don't buy what you're selling here. I have nothing against a team asking the Flames if they can negotiate a contract extension with Hanifin, then approach his agent, and his agent telling said team that Hanifin isn't interested in an extension right now/ever.
Hanifin didn't screw anyone over, because any GM trading for Hanifin would like to know where Hanifin stands on a contract extension, in terms of money and term. Especially now that you can't add conditional picks based on a player extending. Obviously, Conroy didn't have to allow that, but that increases the risk of signing Hanifin for an acquiring team, and consequently reduces the return for the Flames.
---
As for the return itself, I think it's a little light. I think it's a 2nd/3rd short of the value D like Orlov, and Lindholm had over the last couple of years. IMO we got slightly more than for Hanifin than MTL got for Chiarot(2023 1st, 2022 4th, and a prospect(former 3rd)), and Hanifin is the far superior D. Hopefully Miromanov turns into a gem, but he's only a year younger than Hanifin, with 30 NHL GP.

Noah Hanifin is a very high level player, rental or not. People can be happy with an unprotected pick c couple years from now and still wish a couple later picks were included

I guess that depends if Tkachuk would have stayed or not. But yeah, the Gaudreau Columbus got I would not want.

This should really be the path going forward. The player should never tell the team or any team where he is willing to sign. Make every player a rental trade so that everyone is happy. If teams even asked Conroy if Hanifin was willing to sign longterm Conroy should have said “pound sand, I am trading a rental not a sign and trade”.

So Conroy should never try and maximize a return? What’s the true upside, the rental price won’t increase.
