Hmmm, let's see, expedite the retool or potentially lose Markstrom for pennies trying to catch lightning in a bottle...I am hoping this is Conroy and Co. talking through Dreger
That’s the feel I get. Nonis using Dreger to tell fans they tried.
Here's the Markstrom segment on Barn Burner with Dreger
The one part I dont necessarily agree with is Dreger saying that Markstrom will give them one team this summer. Nothing is going to make Conroy take a terrible deal for him if it gets that ugly. If Markstrom wanted to sulk (which I doubt he would) he can waste potentially 2 more years on a rebuilding team.
I think he would be open to quite a few places, as long as those places give him a chance at the playoffs again

IF it is NJ, I would just love their 2024 pick with the idea that they may still not make the playoffs this year. Even if it was lottery protected, grabbing another top 20 this year would be awesome.
~12
18-20
28-32
Tons of capital this year to move up, move for young players, or make the picks
Agreed. The flames are likely to struggle for the rest of the season which could put them in the top 10 with their own first round pick. New Jersey’s 2024 first round pick could be between 15 and 10th overall even with Markstrom. That would give the flames the opportunity to pick one of the highly touted defencemen with their own 1st round pick and then, hopefully, they could trade up by combining Vancouver’s 1st + New Jersey’s 1st to get Iginla in the 10th-11th overall range.
It’s a moot point because I doubt the Markstrom trade happens before the deadline and I doubt the New Jersey wants to trade their 2024 1st round pick.

yeah knowing that Dreger-Nonis connection, that Dreger segment certainly doesn't fill me with confidence when it comes to ownership. I understand the "just try to get in and let's see what happens" mentality from an owner's standpoint, but as a fan ... nothing more frustrating.
That Dreger segment is very telling, and likely exactly what happened the first time they almost traded him.
This whole notion of “just get in” and not that Craig believes in it because I think he wants to trade Markstrom but he was blocked because ownership feels the revenue could still seep in.
Typical flames move, and we all hope it’s wrong but I honestly can’t disagree with Dreger here as there’s just too much smoke in the notion Maloney and Edward’s kaiboshed it at the 11th hour.
I never really bought the "we'll do this in the offseason" line about player movement and business you know you need to do. It is just procrastinating because trades are hard. It won't be any easier in summer. In fact could be more difficult.
Keep in mind by telling Fitz he is happy to hold onto Markstrom for now he is also saying that there will be a much larger market for the player come offseason and if Fitz doesn't move now he could miss out on the goalie they like the best. Unlike the Hanifin scenario the Flames are in the driver's seat here.

Mercer better be a hell of a player for us if we ever end up getting him
Listened to the Dreger video. A lot to think about . He does pose a good point if Markstrom says in summer he only wants to go to one team . It won’t be automatic that it’s New Jersey. The one part I disagreed with is jersey offering .60 cents on the dollar if saros and ullmark are also available. The only way that happens is if Nashville and Boston also want to sell their prime goaltenders for .60 cents on the dollar.
If the Dreger insight is true, that's pretty frustrating stuff to hear as a Flames fan. If ownership is still on the fence, then hopefully a big Lightning win tonight knocks them back towards the side of reality.

He has a NTC, he could ask to be traded anywhere.
We really aren't in the drivers seat, New Jersey will have a lot more options in the offseason.
Sounds like the people above Conroy screwed this up big time. Or the false hope of Dawson Mercer being the piece coming back.

Sorry but with an NMC, player has full control.
Markstrom could say, hey I will only go to 1, 2 or 3 teams
