Mangi with retention. Now we are talking . I wouldn’t think the return would be anything big even with retention. For me it’s opening a spot for a youngster to learn on the backlund line. Feel everyone of our young hopefuls could do with a tour on backlund line.

Am I correct that if the flames use their last retention spot on Mangiapane, they will have no retention spots available until July 1st when Hanifin and Tanev’s deals expire? At which point, they would only have 2 retention spots available until Mangiapane’s deal expires on July 1st of 2025.
The only concern I would have for that would be that it means the flames could not retain on any players if they wanted to make a trade at the draft which is two weeks before NHL free agency. I could see some great potential trade value at the draft for players like Markstrom, Coleman or even Andersson (only if it was a big trade offer) by some teams that really want to take a step in the playoffs. Obviously that’s unlikely. These kind of trades might only be possible after July 1st at the earliest.

I can't imagine what it would be like to for Brad and the brain trust that day.
Connie even said, last fall, they thought it was done that night.
If I remember correctly, Treliving looked completely defeated at the press conference and I can see the slow burning anger under his breathe when he inform the media that Gaudreau decided to go to UFA.
There is nothing imminent for sure on Markstrom or at least nothing I am hearing, from what I am hearing the Flames expect to have Markstrom still past deadline day. I am also hearing that Vladar ask is a 2nd rnd pick and that the Flames really don't want to move him. Still think there is #1 goalie upside there and once Markstrom is moved in the offseason they can tandem him and Wolf next season. Teams are definitely calling about Mangiapane who Conroy has put out there as a guy that's available. Hearing this is where they will use their other retention spot if they can get a deal done.
Win-win in my books. Use this year's retention slot to maximize the return for Mangiapane and then make a retention deal with NJ once the retention slot is available.

Sucks that it’s not till July 1 though. After the 2024 draft
A 2025 pick will be ready to go for the opening of the new building. Still fits within Calgary's plan.
IF it is NJ, I would just love their 2024 pick with the idea that they may still not make the playoffs this year. Even if it was lottery protected, grabbing another top 20 this year would be awesome.

Tons of capital this year to move up, move for young players, or make the picks
Here's the Markstrom segment on Barn Burner with Dreger
Hmmm, let's see, expedite the retool or potentially lose Markstrom for pennies trying to catch lightning in a bottle...I am hoping this is Conroy and Co. talking through Dreger

I'm not in a position to claim whether or not Flames ownership is meddling and blocking deals etc, but if they are then IMO the Flames will have a really hard time ever building a true contender properly.
If Conroy had a trade for Markstrom all lined up and ownership stepped in and blocked it because they thought they had a chance at playoffs or whatever, we are screwed. Plain and simple. You have to be a complete effing moron to think this team had a shot at playoffs when they were on the verge of dumping half their top 4 D-core for futures.
I really hope it's not true.
