Yeah, that was the main reason I wanted to see Markstrom traded. It would be the first time I can remember them trading a guy with term and contributing to success on the ice. Hopefully they still trade him in the offseason even if the return is less.

With Sec saying NJ has circled back and that the deal if it were to get done is complex has my thinking it could be Hanifin + Markstrom package to NJ.

Couple players that could be retained on, an extension to work out so definitely some complexities there.

To NJ
Hanifin 50 percent retained and 8 x 7.5 extension signed
Markstrom 30 percent retained
Rooney

To Calgary
24 1st - top 10 protected, slides to 25 1st if top 10
25 2nd
Mercer
Holtz
Bahl

I may be reading too much into this but I think with Sec's update last night and Friedman casually bringing up the idea of Lundell and a sign and trade, this might be what actually happens. They still think Boston and a sign and trade is possible, but its "what goes the other way" (my wording) and like we all think, or some of us think I should say, a lot of these teams don't have much to send back that the Flames would really want package wise

I’m glad Flames slapped Fritz for leaking.

It’s been years since I was this confident in my GM. Like Cliff Fletcher era.

After last night, I prefer Lohrei (a potential 2-3 D-man) over Lundell.

Hanifin for Lohrei and a 2025 1st. Make it happen!

Next year we have a D core of:
Kylington - Anderson
Lohrei - Weegar
Soloyov/Poirier - Pachal/UFA
Pachal/UFA

Right now I think Pachal is cementing himself in the top six. Seems like a very solid 3rd pair guy. It’s going to take a hell of a camp for one of the kids to supplant him.

This was a shrewd waiver pickup. I think Vegas fans weren't too happy about losing this guy.

My sources tell me the NJ deal is dead, as Murray booked travel for Marky's family with Lynx Air... and now he awaits a seat sale.

I wonder once all the dust settles on the pending trades, especially Tanev/Hanifin, if the flames look at Ty Smith in Pittsburgh who is reportedly very frustrated with the lack of opportunity he’s had since the Marino trade swap with the Devils. He looked like he was putting up respectable numbers for a young D prior to the trade and he hasn’t had much success cracking the Pens big club lineup but he hasn’t looked out of place in the Ahl. Something to consider? Sandman what’s your read on Ty Smith?

Speaking for myself I was 21 when I finally decided to join CP and had been reading for years prior. Dammit, now I do feel old.

We don't need wingers, we need Cs.

Out of Hanifin, Tanev and Markstrom, we HAVE to get at least one C and preferably 2.

This isn't about how Holtz and Mercer compare as players, it's about positional need. Cs and Ds. Cs and Ds.

Holtz doesn't improve the lineup. All it does is allow us to replace Mangiapane, which means we trade Mang next year in hopes for a C. Just go straight to the C now.

Centres are way harder to get. I'd be happy if they pulled one of Poitras or Lundell but I am not holding my breath on it.

Yes, and that's why we need to leverage the current situation to get one.

You settle for a bunch of wingers, and then you wake up the morning after the trade deadline and realize you still have the same problem.

I would take less draft pick capital to secure Mercer and Lundell.

Here's our under-25 depth chart for forwards:

Zary
Sharangovich
Coronato
Pelletier
Pospisil
Honzek
Suniev
Klapka
Stromgren
Lipinski

MAYBE Zary becomes a C. MAYBE Coronato can play C. Otherwise, Lipinski is the only C there.

You add a Holtz, and he slots in with the other 5 or 6 guys at the top of that list. But if you add Mercer and Lundell, suddenly you have 2 full middle-6 lines of NHLers, with lots of top 6 potential.

The Flames are starting to build some depth. But it is all at wing. Add two quality Cs, and suddenly everything takes shape.

Conroy has to focus on Cs at this point.
