I think the package is fine in isolation... but in a universe where the NJ deal also goes through I think I might want something else. I mean... say the NJ deal goes through with Mercer where does Poitras play? the 4th line (because I highly highly doubt they'd put Backs, Kadri, or Mercer there)? Well I suppose you could put one on the Wing (or Holtz if he's the NJ return)... but now you've added to the glut of Wingers.
Doing both basically requires that you have to have additional trades at the ready. It's... messy (and also neglectful to the blueline... I think after doing one of those I would rather the team shift towards acquiring young D).

You are probably right.
The whole team looked bad at the WJC Imo, but Poitras himself had 4 points in 5 games and finished +3. He didn't blow it away, but I would hardly say he dramatically underperformed.
Again, in comparison, Mercer had 6 points in 7 games and was +7 in his 19 year old WJC appearance. Very similar. Mercer had the better team.

Neither deal is real yet, so why bother linking them and worrying about thinking about their consequences together? Just think about the deals in vacuum until they are real.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Part of the Mercer draw is that he was apparently targeted by the Flames in the 20 draft was he not?

Easy. You play one at wing for now (Mercer likely) and hope both develop into top 6 young centermen. That will always hold the most value among any position

Well he plays for the Bruins ... a fire hydrant would have a decent GA/60
His relative xGA60 is in the bottom third of the team (as you'd expect for a 19 year old)

Or they plan to ride their top-4 into ground and see what happens.

I'd probably swerve a bit from Mercer in the Markstrom trade if Poitras was coming from Boton in a Hanifin trade.
Focus on defense with Marky if you get your under 24 center in another deal.

Agreed. It would be weird for a contender to trade roster players, in particular blueliners who are ~4/5 on their depth chart

You still have to bump two guys down. Unless you demote Zary/Pospicel to the Wranglers. Which I suppose could work... shame thou since they've been bright spots. Anything else is poor asset management.
Either way I think the team should be prioritizing blueliners soon. To many wingers.

This time next year Kuzmenko and Mangiapane should be gone. Problem solved.

I wouldn't pencil in Kuzmenko as being a sure thing to be gone yet. If him and Huberdeau continue to be magic together I think you want to keep that guy.

I think they are right. If Kuzmenko continues to click with Huberdeau he could be sent packing next season at this time for a decent return.

Let's assume you get Poitras and Mercer and don't move anymore forwards this offseason.
C: Kadri (LH) , Backlund (LH), Poitras (RH), ???
C/W (Left hand shot): Sharangovich, Zary, Pospisil
C/W (Right hand shot): Mercer
W (Left hand shot): Huberdeau, Mangiapane, Coleman, Pelletier
W (Right hand shot): Kuzmenko, Coronato, Duehr
I think next year that could look something like:
Huberdeau - Sharangovich - Kuzmenko
Zary - Kadri - Mercer
Mangiapane - Backlund - Coleman
Pelletier - Poitras - Coronato
Pospisil - Duehr
It's already pretty forward heavy...but I do think Mangiapane is going to get heavily shopped at the draft if isn't already for that reason. That opens up that spot for Pospisil.
