I'm not an insider and not pretending to be, just what I was told
Before Saturdays 2 pm game. Vladar going to be activated from IR
Markstrom was told early today they're making progress on the deal and they wouldn't have asked him to waive his NMC if they weren't serious about it
Publicly the hangup was flames refusing to retain any salary on Markstrom. I was told if deal goes through Flames are going to be retaining some salary, but it was their biggest bargaining chip and they have made a big deal about how valuable it is to other teams in the deals that have been made, and especially now to NJ since there's still term
*If* a goalie comes back in the deal (NJ needs it to happen essentially) Wolf probably finishes the year in the AHL. Vladar and Vanecek both are signed through next year. Wolf has to go through waivers to return to AHL, so a decision will be made. Vladar for future considerations or on waivers most likely based on current interest
Unrelated to the Markstrom stuff, lots of talk around the wingers. Mangiapane, Kuzmenko and Sharangovich are on the last year of their contract next year. Huberdeau, Coleman, Coronato, Pelletier, Honzek all either signed or team wants them playing top 9 next year, leaving only one winger spot open with Zary and Pospisil earning long term roles on the team as well. Zary/ Pospisil both want to play C, but with Kadri/Backlund only one top 9 C role is realisticly open

And
Perhaps I’m thinking for the long run that it might be best to mentor him with markstrom instead of throwing him to the wolves
But
That’s just an unprofessional opinion

One could almost say it’s stupid to think Wolf is a NHL starter.

There will be loads of vets available in the summer who can mentor. If you can get a haul for Markstrom, you do it.

Real insiders don't report or speculate on the chatter. It's always happening, and often gets close but can still fall through

Think Wood might have been talking about start of next season since both Vanecek and Vladar have a year remaining as he posted.
But really so much time before it comes to that, and 100% it would be one of the other two traded or on waivers before Wolf.

Steinberg said Wolf doesn't have to clear waivers next year either. Extra year for goalies.

He’s not at this point. But if markstrom’s gone play him in half of the remaining games. You can’t shelter him forever.
