That might be the most apt description of Biden I've ever heard. Well done!

Democrats win another special election (Santos' seat in NY though, so were favored)

Education, crime and now immigration. None of those issues has really turned the tide for Republicans in the suburbs. With former President Donald Trump as the likely standard bearer again for the party, their job is made even harder. The latest NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll found that almost two-thirds of suburban voters have an unfavorable opinion of Trump and, in a head-to-head matchup, Biden leads Trump by 16 points with suburban voters.

This isn't a zero-sum game. Criticism of Biden shouldn't be seen as a promotion of Trump, particularly when the Dems could easily opt to run a different candidate.

Unprecedented? Sure, but so is having a historically poor-polling 80+ year old president who should obviously have a nurse guiding him around.

Libs are going to blame leftists for making perfect the enemy of good if/when Trump is elected, but don't have the self-reflection to ask why the Dems didn't opt to run a non-octogenarian candidate.

Usually I love Jon and his takes, but he's way off the mark on this one.
Biden referred to the Mexican president Cici (name of the Egyptian president) while talking about Israel's war in Gaza, he is absolutely losing his mental acuity. And yes he is still a thousand times better than the prospect of another Trump term, but the fact that the democrats care more about preserving the status quo and giving Biden his "due" instead of finding a better qualified candidate to run that isn't inching closer to dementia day by day

Because sitting presidents always win their party’s nomination. The last - and only - time they were denied it was Franklin Pierce in 1852.

And if you’re asking why Biden won the nomination in 2020, it’s because he had the strongest support among Black Democrats, without whom it’s impossible to win the party nomination.

Biden won the primaries and the nomination on his own accord in 2020. Look to Democrats for that, including (if I remember correctly) African-American voters in the Carolinas for the victory. He wasn't initially doing well in the other states.

Are sitting presidents usually 81 and suffering from severe cognitive decline?

Do crises not precipitate change?

It's hard to see how that would play out. The parties only have but so much power to pick a candidate these days. They could lean on Biden to bow out, and go through the primaries. I'm guessing that would lead to a Newsome win since he has by far the most name recognition. The primaries aren't the best way to pick the nominee with the best chance of winning though, and Newsome would be problematic in the key states needed to win the general election and is likely a worse bet to beat Trump.

It's really too bad that Harris turned out to be a dud. A popular VP to pass the baton too would have probably been the right play here, but she's not a good candidate either.

And that was due to his appeasement of pro-slavery proponents in the south. It wasn't in keeping with the party's principles, so they replaced him. He was also a dark horse candidate to begin with, and not an established politician. It was a pretty unique situation back then for that to even occur. The unwritten rule in American politics is that if you were good enough to be elected president once, you should be given the chance to run again. It works more often than it doesn't, so you can understand why the Democratic establishment is sticking with Biden. I think they also believe that he's done enough policy-wise to defeat someone like Trump who isn't really a policy candidate.

It's quite a gamble to take, hoping the past repeats itself, especially in the light of such awful polling numbers. I just pray that they're right, for everyone's sake.

Ronald Reagan was senile in his second term (which is why it’s funny to see Republicans freaking out over Biden).

But think about how this would have played out. Some faction of the Democratic party steps up and says Biden is not fit to continue serving. That he’s so bad the party needs to take an extraordinary measure that hasn’t been taken since before the Civil War. Candidates emerge. They’re all asked why they’re running, and they say Biden is no longer up to the job.

Meanwhile, Fox News, the Republicans, and Trump are having an absolute field day. The news every night leads with Democrats saying Biden isn’t fit to continue to serve as president.

And then, since there’s no clear successor to Biden, the Democrats engage in a bruising nomination race. The usual fissures between the progressive and moderate wings open. More Republicans doing cartwheels at their good fortune.

And after all that, there’s a good chance Biden still wins, only now he’s been damaged by a nomination race. Or someone like Harris, who polls even worse than Biden, wins the nomination.

The adults in the room could foresee how this would play out. Which is why they’ve closed ranks around Biden.

Our President is so old.

How old is he?

He’s old enough to remember this joke structure.

Well this is slightly concerning. Something has come up today that could be posing a major security threat, likely to U.S./Western interests with regards to a "destabilizing foreign military capacity".

Or maybe it's you who lacks comprehension?

Jon very clearly and explicitly said in his monologue that Biden is too old for the job and we should be worried about his mental state. And he wasn't joking when he said that either.

Biden accidently blurted out the word "Mexico" when he meant to say "Egypt". Oh wow, smoking gun proof that he has dementia.

I've been very clear that the dems should have had Biden step aside and hold a real primary to run a younger candidate. Not because Biden is losing it, but because the perception that Biden is losing it could cost him the election.

How can people think Biden is losing it but Trump isn't? Or is it just Republicans don't care if their guy is completely off his rocker?

Seems pretty obvious neither man should be at the helm of the most powerful country in the world but here we are.
