Flames are 11 ahead of Ottawa and the trade deadline is still weeks away. Trade Markstrom soon, sure there is a chance. Wait til the deadline we just might be too far ahead to fall that far.
Some of these other teams might be selling at the deadline too

That's actually the 2nd time I'm hearing about 2027 after the Rangers loss. I forget if it was Steinberg, or Barn Burner that mentioned it in the first place.
I think the argument was that ownership took note of how great it was for the Oilers when they made the 2nd round of the playoffs in the first year of the new building. Which gives Conroy the greenlight to make any moves so that the team becomes competitive(more than just a wildcard) for a window starting at 2027.

So if the goal is to target 2027-2028 to be a "good team" then you have 3.5 years to really try to add more talent to the roster.
Flames Top Assets Under 24: Wolf, Zary, Pelletier, Coronato, Honzek, Suniev, Pospisil, Poirier, Morin, Brzustewicz, Kuznetsov, Pachal
Flames Assets Under Contract in 27-28: Huberdeau, Kadri, Weegar
Key UFA Calendar:
23-24: Hanifin, Tanev, Kylington,
24-25: Mangiapane, Kuzmenko, Sharangovich
25-26: Markstrom, Backlund, Andersson
26-27: Coleman
Really that window makes sense, and really means any of the guys that don't have contracts beyond that should be available.

I don't think that it does, even if Wolf plays lights out. I think it would completely take the wind out of the team's sails. Which would result in the players not working as hard in a sunk season.

Sounds like we need to get our hands on the roadmap that PR is feeding the media. We don't want to fall behind on the coordinated messaging...

I expect tp bottom out next year. If we trade Markstrom, Tanev and Hanifin we won't be good next year even if Wolf is the real deal.
Who would sign here in the summer? Even if the Flames wanted to make the playoffs, nobody is going to want to come here next summer.
If you are current Flames and your team sells just a couple points out of the playoffs, who wants to stay? I wouldn't be surprised if guys like Weegar, Rasmus, Coleman, Mangiapane, Backlund, Kadru and Huberdeau all want to be moved after this deadline. This can't be sitting well with guys who want to make the playoffs.
We are bottoming out next year and other than maybe being stuck with Huberdeau or Kadri and Backlund potentially sticking it out next year, I wouldn't be shocked if the rest are moved in the next 12 months.

Steinberg kicking off his time with Frank now again talking about 2027 and how the Flames have identified 2027 as the target.
Frank: Flames and Devils had agreed to a trade in principle, and Markstrom was in agreement. At some point just before finishing it, the deal was scuddled. The two sides had gone as far down the road as you can without finalizing the trade.
Believes some level of salary retention was involved. Believes NJD may be frustrated due to the trade not being finalized.

That depends on the return, and also how the players feel about Wolf.
If they think Wolf is capable of replacing Markstrom, and the Flames turn Markstrom into let's say...Mercer plus futures then they might view that as a net positive.

We don’t need the media to tell us this.
Conroy said himself that the goal is to have a competitive team to open the new building.

Frank says NJ had a level of frustration that the Markstrom deal didn’t get done. Frank says again that Markstrom waived his NMC.

Add Weegar. $6.25 mil cap hit and one of the best dmen in the NHL. He asks to be traded, who doesn't want him? NTC is the only thing that hurts his value, but if he wants out he will get us a ton

Yeah. If Frank is to be believed then I think they thought the deal just had to be rubber stamped and then it wasn't and now it is dead. Will see if he is right soon enough.

Wow sounds like the Markstrom deal was just about to cross the finish line.
Lol this organization...
I have a hard time seeing them being a serious contender by 2027, and if they rush it they're going to #### it up.
If they wanted to be a playoff team by 2027 they should of been bottoming out last year and this year.
Maybe that adds motivation to ship out Markstrom quickly. They think they can sneak into a top 10 pick this year and bottom out next year.
If they want to be a playoff team by 2027 they better hop someone really hurdles over their projected ceiling out of their current prospect group. It typically takes a prospect ~5 or so years from the draft to really emerge.

Maybe Murray Edwards interference killed the Markstrom deal at the 11th hour. Pure conjecture but many have speculated that.

It’s the narrative that makes more sense to me than Conroy trying to really stick it to New Jersey and then scuttling the deal
