I think it would be better if you named 2 captains (1 from each division), and those captains could "draft" any player they wanted in the league to build their team. Put some stakes on it, so they don't just pick their friends, but pick players to build a team that they think can win.
For example, say McDavid and Matthews were picked, and they could literally play GM and try to build a team, and the winner gets $1 million to give to a charity of their choice, plus a trophy or something for their mantle. The game would actually have some meaning and you might even see players like Tanev get selected. Players who are actually elite at things that help team win real hockey games. I would watch. It would be better than watching meaningless pond hockey with nothing at stake.
