I actually like the format re-design here I just don’t get why only 12 people get to compete? Like, why must this event only be 2-3 hrs and why can’t you just make sure you get all players through? I feel like they’re letting tail wag the dog here. Not every player must be live televised and every player that’s an all star should compete in every event, IMO. Yes it’d be more like 4-5 hrs but who cares? No other sports are on, nobody doing anything? Have events run through commercials and show replays when back?
Only having 12 guys compete is weird.

McDavid faced the wrong way on the puck handling challenge. If that was a drill in hockey, it would mean he did it wrong and would have to do it again. Shouldn’t count.

They should have every player compete against their own team, and then send the team champs in to compete at the all-star game

Almost everyone is cheating at this stickhandling comp. Including McDavid. You're not supposed to turn back. Given this is for money there should be a penalty.

I do feel McDavid has been a missed opportunity in marketing for the NHL for how bland his personality is. You don't get anything to work with. At least with Crosby, you get that typical "good hockey kid" energy. McDavid isn't that far removed from a robot.
Hopefully Bedard can live up to the hype, and have some personality to go along with it. It's important for your top players to have some form of personality. Even if the guy is kinda a prick, and you love to cheer against them (Tkachuk), it still brings attention and hype. NHL is absent of heroes and villans.
