Another example of the league letting one of its preferred franchises get out of a bad contract. If his behaviour was that unprofessional that it warranted the termination of his contract, it was also unprofessional enough that he should not be allowed to sign with another team.

He was having a bad year, but I can see this event having a positive impact on his play given how close he probably felt he came to having the game taken away from him.

Him signing with another team doesn't help Chicago

He had his best PPG average since the 2017-2018 season. He was on pace for 46 points. Not bad these days for what his salary was.

Maybe the Flames should include a clause in their contracts that players can be terminated for underperforming relative to their cap hit.
Come on, if you're doing something that even the Black Hawks organization considers unethical, it probably is unethical by anyone else's standards, too.

The termination might. He was about .5 PPG after 16 games and making $4M (so average money) while not being great defensively I think.

Yes, $4M cap space for a lottery team is a massive weaponizable asset that they should be able to turn into at least a second round pick.

They probably would have been able to trade him for an asset at the deadline. All in all, I think terminating doesn't really help them, unless they somehow weaponize that cap space.

CHI currently has $17M in cap space. I am pretty sure they would have rather traded him

The Blackhawks were, I believe, 7-13-0 when they bought Perry out and traded for Beauvillier to replace him. Since then they've been 5-14-2. So their winning percentage has actually gone down (which is not surprising given injuries). It would be hard to make a case that axing Perry helped them on the ice.
Off the ice, the Hawks replaced one pending UFA with another in the bottom of a rebuild, at the cost of a conditional 5th-round pick. Their cap number is still about the same. They're very slightly worse off for that.
The biggest consequence of the whole fracas so far is that it gave the Canucks enough cap space to trade for Zadorov without retention. The Canucks were 15-8-1 before Zadorov actually joined the team, and have been 12-3-2 since. He's plugged a big hole created by injuries on the Vancouver blue line, so I'm sure they're glad to have him over Beauvillier plus a 3rd.
The Flames were 9-10-3 before the trade and have been 9-8-2 since, so they gained a couple of picks and several million in cap space without any material on-ice change in a losing season. That's a significant win.
From where I sit, it looks like the Flames and Canucks both gained more than Chicago did from the Perry incident.

So we can expect them to add up to four 2nd round picks with the cap space they have? Alllllrighty.
