Yeah that’s true. Maybe he’s a headcase too.

The point is obviously to go further, but getting to the cup is usually preceded by steps in that direction, and that’s what they took. Just because it fell apart in the offseason doesn’t mean the team that had been built up until that point wasn’t ready to compete for anything. That’s revisionist history.

The window was tiny because Gaudreau and Tkachuk leaving closed it, not because they didn’t rebuild properly.
Teams rebuild to get players like Tkachuk. We had him. We lost him. Doesn’t mean we didn’t rebuild properly to get him.

For Tanev? Maybe. But even if the Flames get a 1st for Tanev (which isn’t guaranteed), the odds aren’t great that a player drafted 20th-32nd will turn out better than Macleod. Given Conroy’s declared strategy of trying to turn things around quickly, I wouldn’t hate a deal that turned a 34 year old 2nd pairing D on an expiring contract into a big, fast 25 year old two-way C on pace for 15-20 goals.

I wouldn't hate McLeod as the centerpiece for Tanev, if the returns for Lindholm and Hanifin focus more on picks and prospects.
Losing Lindholm will create a huge hole at C, and McLeod would help tremendously.

Probably been brought up, but doesn't McLeod's brother play for the Oilers? This writes itself.

I haven't watched NJ much, but would he be a good piece to get back for an extended Hanifin?

Kind of mediocre but he would be sort of a half baked replacement for Tanev though. Definitely better than Gilbert, Desimone & Osterle at least. In other words, I wouldn't hate this pickup.
Bonus: he's half Thai.

Ok so let's take a look at what NJD has to work with.
2024 picks: 1st, 3rd (no 2nd)
2025 picks: They have them all still
2026 picks: they have them all still.
So lots to work with there
Prospects:
Nemec (no way)
Foote (not really interested)
Casey (that's who I would target)
Holtz (would love him instead of Mcleod but probably not possible)
Lenni Hammenaho (I think Sandman has posted about him, so let's get him)
Graeme Clark (meh)
Chase Stillman (meh)
So let's say McLeod, protected 1st, and Casey or Hammenaho for Markstrom and Tanev?

Tanev is truly a player you don't appreciate unless you watch him regularly. Certainly that was the case for me.
He is a far better player than I realized.

Cool. Sounds like a few balls in the air. Really hope value is brought back with whatever deals are out there.

2) It is common for UFAs to demand NMC. Markstrom was clear that he preferred to sign in Calgary if he wasn't going to get a NMC in Vancouver. However, there is zero reasons to assume he would have signed with any other team without having a NMC. I would say not giving him one might have ended up pushing him into Edmonton, or at least somewhere else.
I have zero issues with Markstrom's contract, including his NMC. I am far from a Treliving apologist, but that was a fair contract IMO. In fact, I would say this - Treliving absolutely sucked as a GM in 3 areas:
1) UFA deals helped kill this team
2) Continually trading picks to fill depth
3) Terrible coaching hires
4) Inability to find capable and consistent goaltending
Markstrom was finally the cure for #4. I think he has been good through most of his contract, with last year being the 'blip' year so far. Up until last year, and through this year so far, Markstrom has given the Flames #1 starter consistency. I hope he does get traded as I believe the Flames need a rebuild, and by the time they become competitive again, Markstrom may not even be playing in the NHL. I think the assets gained - especially with retention - are valuable to a rebuild. However, Markstrom's contract is fair, including the NMC.
|
Since joining the Flames:
90-90 record
.907 SV%
+0.202 GSAE/60
+0.77 Wins above replacement
The guy is mediocre. If you squint and make a slick PPT presentation I might see average. For $6 million.

I'd prefer the Devils trade Holtz vs McLeod. McLeod is the best faceoff guy in the NHL.

I would prefer it as well, lots of bottom 6 guys are great at faceoffs, I will take the young goal scoring sniper every day.

I think this was something I pointed out in the signing thread, as I drunk posted and cried about losing Tanev. Tanev is a guy who makes almost no mistakes. Ever.
