Canadian goaltenders for sure, we’re not in a golden era by any stretch. But I think it’s probably more parity than anything, and coaches realizing cooking your goaltender for 65+ games in regular season isn’t ideal for playoff success.

With the amount of time and especially money parents spend on skill development for skaters nowadays you would think that goaltending should be better than ever with the opportunities to have personalized coaching.

Even if you have to retain salary at this point, it could be worth the sacrifice depending on what the return is.

The flaw in this thinking is obvious: Conroy is simply NOT going to waste time working out a deal with someone if his player isn't going to waive his NMC. One would assume that Conny has a pretty good idea of Markstrom's plans and will act accordingly.

Before Conroy try to trade Markstrom, he would have to ask him if he would waive and where?
Anyway, there are plenty of other trades he needs to make , I do not think he is even trying to trade Markstrom unless someone asks

He doesn't have to but that would make it a waste of time if he did it after negotiating a trade only to have Markstrom reject it.

Yeah that’s what I meant. English is not good
He would need some kind of understanding with Markstrom otherwise it’s a waste of time and hurt feelings

These conversations have already taken place with markstrom. I know Craig knows where Markstrom stands and where he is and isn’t willing to go and play if it isn’t Calgary.
These conversations happen more often. One on Ones with GMs happen on the bus, the plane in the weight room ect. They talk to the their agent and Craig talks to their agent. Every player is different but Craig knows…

To your knowledge is Marky willing to waive? I'd have guessed no.

I'd read what Sec said as he is willing to waive for some very specific spots.
Interesting note on Marky - his last two years include $2.5M in bonuses in both 2024 and 2025, so if the Flames were to maximize Marky's value, it could be viewed that trading him would be best on or after his first $2.5M bonus is paid (I imagine it's on July 1st, 2024).
...unless of course there's a hot goalie market in-season this year.

Too many reports about Markstrom only willing to go to certain places, and those places are unlikely to be teams we make a deal with so we are stuck with him as he cares more about family than hockey.
He earned that right when the Flames stupidly gave him a NMC but sucks for us nonetheless.

The Flames were competing with the Oilers for his services. I don't think handing him an NMC was all that stupid.
If the Flames do manage to trade him for some assets, I think it's an absolute win. He was a free agent signing, and outside of being piss poor last season - he hasn't turned into an anchor by any means.
If the Oilers had him right now, they'd be better than they are. That's a win.

Let him go to the Oilers, we have won nothing with him, weren't in a place that we were ever going to win with him.
I am competing against the NHL not the Oilers, but even if we were just worried about the Oilers they are not a Marstrom away from competing they have major issues beyond that.
If we trade him that is great, but not sure we will and that is the concern.

Top ten free agents get NMCs often.
It's not stupid if you want the player.

No thanks. I see nothing in this guy but a bottom 6 depth player. We can do better.
