Don't think they'll be more western-Canada focused than the other Toronto-centric network.
No matter who has the rights people will complain because majority of the viewers are out east and will get the best coverage.

How do you figure? Their production is light years ahead of SN.

It didn't get the name Toronto Sports Network for nothing. The reality is that whether it be TSN or RSN, the Leafs will always be the golden goose. It's very possible that TSN may not even be interested in taking on the regional rights to the Flames as I'm sure they would be more interested in the Oilers and Canucks.

TSN has the Jets and Senators.. not exactly the golden geese of the league.

Bell and Rogers also own big chunks of the Leafs so you can bet they are going to focus on them.

TSN has regional rights for the Leafs and Canadiens as well.

Really, TSN only left the national market. If you have SN+, Centre Ice etc its kind of like they never left.

The streaming rights value will probably go up by a huge chunk. I could see both Rogers and Bell going hard for them since they both now sell subscriptions without needing cable. If those get split up - it will be mighty annoying.

To be a stickler - they have 50% of the Leafs right. They are like the Raptors and split between TSN and Sportnet

That's a good point! Would the NHL have to step back in and resurrect NHL Live? Which, can't believe I'm saying this as I had many complaints about it, is was a far superior service to Sportsnet +

Is it coincidental that Calgary and Edmonton have the same rights holder or is there some economies or scale (for instance) for having the same one?

The next NHL deal in Canada is going to be massive $$$$ regardless of what Rogers might be saying. The digital rights alone in this day and age are going to hold huge value. I wouldn't be surprised if more than just TSN and Rogers enters the bidding war. Amazon, Disney, Netflix, etc. You just know Bell wants to put all NHL games on Crave though or something like that.

Also, anyone who's a Flames fan in Canada but not in Alberta or Saskatchewan is going to want Rogers to win the national rights. Because they have them, they're able to do 40-50 Flames games national each year but without the rights, the maximum number of Flames games shown nationally would be something like 18-20 like it used to be in the TSN days.

Am sure it'll be big money still, and the emphasis has shifted from traditional tv to streaming, but Rogers losing all that money and hockey seemingly losing popularity in Canada especially with younger people, it feels like the CDN rights deal is facing pretty big headwinds.

I'd be pleased to see the Flames go over to TSN if only to step away from Rogers and differentiate from the Oilers. Always feels like the flames are treated second class compared to them, granted they've had McDavid but still... love to see the flames with a new rights holder who doesn't have any conflict as far as who they promote within the rights area.

It wouldn't really matter since it is cheaper to buy the NHL streaming package than a typical TV package. It's $11/month for ESPN+ so $77 USD for the season. I think the Canadian one is around $199 CAD.

They have TSN+ just like Sportsnet+. They push it now for the NFL but they'd push it for hockey if they had it. (its also terrible like Sportsnet+)

Is it really? The Canadian broadcasting market is nowhere near as lucrative as it is in the US. There's not nearly as much money spent on talent or product. I simply don't see a massive deal coming. The NFL doesn't even try in Canada as they flipped their product to DAZN where you can get Sunday ticket cheaper than you can in the USA. I do think the NHL may be able to get close to the same amount of money total by splitting the deal with networks but I just don't see them ever getting a better deal than the one they are getting out of. The viewership numbers and revenues simply don't support it as Rogers can attest.
