Well, Zadorov was a huge Sutter fan, about he made him better the past 2 season and about how others in the room didn't like him and are still not playing any better this year. After a month of play he sees where this is going, as his previous comments somewhat alluded to, and he's be better off somewhere else then be frustrated with the way the team and dressing room attitude is looking the rest of this year.

The agent talking about ice time in a tweet is not the straw that broke the camels back here, or the ice time a driving force behind why he wants his client to go, it's a lazy agent taking the spotlight of an eastern Flames swing through the hockey media center of Canada.

you are overthinking everything

if the Flames gave him the $$ and term he wanted he would be signed...locker room and all
they don't want to sign him for that and would prefer to trade him obviously

the trade request is mutual...the agent is just being an idiot

I highly doubt the situation is that he could have made big money with big term in Calgary but because of his high moral and ethical standards regarding winning and effort he has decided he wants to leave. If Conroy had backed up the Brinks truck the way Zadorov wanted he probably could have found it within himself to overlook all those other things.

ironically the Flames will be one of the only teams who have space...it can go to young players who actually want to be here or be used to acquire them

feel free to bump
I don't think the Flames are one of the only teams to have capspace. A lot of contracts were structured to expire in 2024. Here's the current cap outlook:

Available capspace 2024-25($87.5M cap)
Ana $32.3M
Ari $43.1M
Bos $25.1M
Buf $24.2M
Cgy $31.0M
Car $31.7M
Chi $51.3M
Col $2.6M + ($7M LTIR Landeskog?)
Cbj $21.5M
Dal $18.4M
Det $30.1M
Edm $14.2M
Fla $28.0M
Lak $22.6M
Min $10M
Mon $12.1M + ($12M LTIR Price)
Nsh $27.8M
Njd - $20.8M
Nyi - $5.3M
Nyr - $15.4M
Ott - $11M
Phi - $19M
Pit - $18M
Sjs - $35.6M
Sea - $26M
Stl - $16.8M
Tbl - $11.6M
Tor - $34.2M
Van - $31.7M
Vgk - $15.9M + ($5M LTIR Lehner)
Wsh - $14M
Wpg - $17.9M

Under $10M ; Over $30M

Odd times continue as a fan. One of the solid team members that fans like out of the blue requests an awkwardly timed trade. All the reasoning for not re-signing him is there and understandable. But at the same time it points to the organization continuing to be reactive, rather than strategic.

At the same time it could end up being beneficial for the team, ensuring others know he is available and hopefully starting an outbidding war (albeit small scale).

The rollercoaster continues.

I think we as fans (which leaks into media and management) were too impatient with the group, personally. Lots of perennial contenders never went the full distance. That doesn't mean it's not fun to have a good team that competes and has a chance.

That said, as soon as Johnny decided to leave, I agree with you. Management should have known it would be a domino affect from there and went full firesale at that point. But Huberdeau and Kadri gave everyone a glimmer of the "retool" hope.

I'll miss Z. I like his refreshing attitude and outspokenness.

I don't get that vibe that he was unhappy not getting re-upped in offseason or in the first month, and that's why his agent is doing this now. His contracts have all been offseason.

Maybe the Flames haven't engaged his agent yet in the way they expect, but still, I think Zadorov if unhappy probably would've said something himself, not through the agent. I don't think the Flames want any part in trading him at this time, before this, at least not until Christmas and see where the team is and he is at.

To me and the timing of this seems as if it's more than just him looking forward to July 1 already, instead that it's something he's not happy with as being part of this team.

In the end, it doesn't matter, he's now traded sooner than later for whatever reason, unless he comes out and says his agent misspoke, which he hasnt.

I think just looking at cap space coming available isn't that great. You could have cap space that you're happy about with a Lucic type deal expiring, or you could need to use a bunch of it to keep people like Vancouver and Pettersson for example.

come on now...many of these teams have a bunch of their own guys to resign

Vancouver for example
Toronto lol...they don't have cap space, they won't even be able to bring their current team back

Flames will be one of the few teams with legitimate cap space and not 10 guys to resign if they are going with young guns

Disagree with everything in this assessment. Zadorov told the team he wanted to stay but the team wasn't willing to give him the dollar or term he wanted. Seems like they have a plan as to how they want to construct the roster, and a retirement contract for Z wasn't part of the plan. Strategic rather than reactive. The timing makes sense as Z is going for his last big payday, so he would prefer to play for a contending team to try and increase his value as a UFA with playoff games and exposure. Whether the team trades him to a contender is likely based on the offers out there.

Its already been reported that the Flames don't want to give him what he is looking for and would prefer a trade

Calgary does not want to give retirement contracts to players currently not getting it done...nor should they

I agree with you Petterson, and Hronek in VAN.

Toronto it would be Nylander, and they have to rebuild the D, but they might want to spend Brodie's money ++ on someone like Hanifin.

My point is that teams will have options, and a team like Carolina might want to bring in Hanifin instead of Skjei for example. Or perhaps, Boston might want to pay Lindholm instead of DeBrusk. I don't think that CGY would be the only team with money to spend in the off-season, mostly because the cap is going up by $4M.

That’s fair, and in the case of a guy like Zadorov I get it… if it were offensively team friendly, fine.

Not at a competitive market rate.

In the case of Zadorov, I do also think it’s beneficial to have a consistent Russian presence who can vouch for the city to other Russians.

The Flames have neglected one of the most prolific hockey nations in the world for way too long.

Sign him for what? and is their team better or worse.

I'm not saying they won't get contracts, I am saying they won't get what they are demanding from the Flames

Lindholm won't get 7x9.3
Hanifin won't get 7x7
Zadorov won't get 5 or 6 years and a raise
Tofolli won't get 4-6 years

Why should the Flames pay more?

all IMO

lets see

you can say Toronto has 30M of cap but that is with half a team to sign

Barely a month into the season, I hardly think the Flames contract numbers are hard lines in the sand just yet and wouldn't be revisited monthly as the season goes on; and the fact that Edwards out contract negotiations on hold for a bit around the outdoor game could play into this too, but if the Flames didn't play hardball with final contract terms with any one of the pending UFAs in the summer, why would they start with Zadorov now?

Anyway if there's anyone in the league who will talk about his after he leaves, it will be him.

Would love to somehow pry a first round pick from a team if they trade Zadorov. I think he is a good player white a rare mix of physicality and skating that any team with cup aspirations will covet. I also think getting a first round pick for him would set a precedent for any returns the flames get for guys like Tanev or Hanifin.
