Is it based on projecting? Even if he just maintains his play it's a fantastic deal.
And he hasn't just had one good year. He just had 64 points and then when he was 23 he had 55 point pace. Even that pace is good at this cap hit moving forward (for a guy this age and with his metrics).

Brandon is a great kid. He and his family have worked extremely hard to get him to the NHL. He's always exceeded expectations. TB was smart locking him up.

Brandon is a good payer, but his acquisition cost was huge, and then you need to pay big dollars over 8 years to keep him. Good age for the 8 years for sure.
Chicago certainly came out good on the deal, and Oliver Moore is a great prospect. With another first to come.

The time to make the longterm commitment is when they are 24 or 25. Worst time to do it is if they are 29 or 30. Looks like a good deal.

Mangiapane got 35. CP would not approve of a deal like this for him IMO.

Not really comparable situations but, $700k more + locked in for 5 years longer for Hagel is way worth it compared to Mangiapane.
If Mangiapane gets back to near 30 goals for both of the next two seasons, is he going to get less than a $700k raise on his next deal. Let's see how that plays out.
I'd take Hagel over Mangiapane if they were both UFA.

A 7 or 8 year deal is always going to have some risk. As Flames fans, I think we can appreciate that it is a safer bet to sign that kind of deal for a young player who has shown they can produce in your system vs. an older player coming off a career year on a different team.

Not comparable because the contracts are different, which was my point. If Hagel drops to 20g 45p suddenly this contract doesn't look as good, is all I was saying. A year ago now cp would've been stoked to lock up Bread on a deal like that, but his production dipped slightly and now most are thankful we went short term.

I think a lot of people felt nervous signing Mangiapane to a long term big money deal.
To me he never felt like a guy who was going to be a year over year 30 goal guy but more in that 18-25 range.
Seemed like he really disappeared down the stretch of his career year.

The problem for TB was that Hagel may well produce 60 points as long as he's playing with some of the best players in the NHL.
Query whether they could replace him with someone younger and cheaper who might well produce similar or close to similar numbers at a fraction of the cost?
Bread was more likely to slip due to his line mates.
When we talk about whether Hubby will rebound this year, my #1 question is whether Lindholm gets traded? It's never just about the player for 95% of the NHL.

Hagel also played 60-65% of his ice with Kucherov and Point. I wonder if 65 points has to do with playing with 2 100 point guys.
He also got tons of first pp time with Kucherov and Point too.
Good player playing with great players who inflated his points. IMO he isn't a $6.5 mil player

Who was it that I had the argument with in here when the trade happened that told me that Hagel would never be more than a third-liner on TB, and that he would never put up offense like he did with Chicago?
I love this player, and he’s worth every penny of that contract and more. He’s not big, but he plays like a wolverine on skates- he’s mean, and he’s got guts. This is the kind of player you win with. He even got a few Selke votes, IIRC.

There’s a reason Hagel got to play with those players, when TB could have put someone else there- you have to be good to play with players like that. Hagel had 37 points, with 21 goals, in 55 games in his last season with Chicago- and there weren’t many “great” players there. Toews was pissed when they traded Hagel.

I like him and I didn't mind the pick up even though it was costly.
But Hyman got 80+ and Nuge puts up 100 last year playing with 2 guys over 120 points.
Hagel is good, probably a 20 goal 20 assist guy playing with 2 stars getting 65 because of them. $6.5 mil is a lot for how good he is.
People crap on Backlund and Coleman's contract, but they put up 45-55 playing a defensive role and lots of minutes on the PK. Hagel is young so that is good but on a different team in a different role he isn't getting $6.5 mil

Like I said, 37 points in 55 games with the Blackhawks when he was 22. He’s only going to get better.

Kucherov and Point any better with Hagel than Johnson or Palat? I like Hagel better but 2 of these guys play with whoever and play very well with whoever.

You mean like Hagel did with the lowly Blackhawks, without the benefit of having Kucherov or Point?

Almost half his minutes with Pat Kane and got to play first pp time with Kane in Chicago, probably by default because they were so bad.
55 games is a small sample size. He is good but $6.5 mil is a bit much.

Its a reasonable risk IMO but not every player gets better every single season
