They sure do like their 8 year deals.

Another young player who drops in their laps. Tampa has some terrific pro and amateur scouting.

Dropped in their lap?
They paid a high price to get him:
2022-Mar-18 Traded from Chicago Blackhawks with round 4 pick in the 2022 draft (Kenny Connors) and round 4 pick in the 2024 draft to Tampa Bay Lightning for Taylor Raddysh, Boris Katchouk, conditional round 1 pick in the 2023 draft (Oliver Moore) and round 1 pick in the 2024 draft

They paid a high ass premium to have him for a few years on chump change. Not a guy that dropped in their laps by any means.

Fair enough. Still - a gamble that has paid off for them though. They don't seem to miss often.

This seems rich. Hagel is a good player but an eight year commitment? Woof.

He’s 24. This is the perfect age age for an 8 year deal

Making what Killorn does in Anaheim (and what I expect he was asking for an extension in TB). But 4 years more obviously, which, at 24, is OK.
It will be interesting - this contract kicks in when Stamkos is a UFA. And one year before Hedman. I think they will sign Stamkos to a short term deal and try for a cup in the next 3 years.

He's only just turning 25. Scored 30. You lock that up for 8 all day.

That seems like a great deal for a 24 year old who just got 64 points

The danger is reading too much into a season, but he had 44 the year before with two teams (one of which was terrible).
The other option would have been a Mangiapane type deal.

The deal is based off one good year. It's a big commitment with a lot of projecting and I feel like only the core / star players should get eight year deals. I don't know, to me it feels super risky.

Hagel is in their core now. He's their 4th best forward and Stamkos only has a year left on his contract. As for next year he's a top 3 forward on that team, after Point and Kucherov. He's their best LW right now, by a long way.
He's going to play with either Point or Stamkos next year, unless Stamkos plays wing, and most likely with Kucherov too. He's going to score.

He'll probably score in the regular season if he gets the minutes and linemates but I haven't been that impressed with him to sign him to an eight year deal with a fairly decent cap hit. On paper it looks good if you just stat watch and project him to repeat the same kind of numbers for the next eight years.
