The Flames finished 16th last year, in a year when everything went wrong. So your assuming with everything going right, they'll to battle extra hard to get where they were last year?

Yeah, I don't think LA is that far ahead of Calgary, if at all.
They haven't been all that inspiring in the playoffs.

Well the Flames were again one of the healthiest teams in the league last year, so I wouldn't say everything went wrong.

I think it may depend on whether or not some of the UFA's are dealt and at what time, and the return that comes back.

I think a top four defenseman missing the whole season counts as an injury.
Tanev missed 17 games (almost 20% of the season)
Huberdeau missed 3
Andersson got hit by a car.

Naw. Calgary playing well can easily compete with Edm and LAK. I don't see how Kopitar at 36 is a lock to lead his team to the playoffs again. The Oilers had career years out of most of their forward corps.

I also think people will be pleasantly surprised at what the youth, when actually allowed to play, bring to the team. Instead of the bottom six being populated by journeymen vets putting up 15-20 points, they'll be lots of young energy guys bringing 30ish points.
A lot of people in here will be disappointed when we re-sign Lindholm to a $9million/year contract. I believe that Hanifin will be traded for offensive help.

Allegedly Petry has been traded to Detroit.

People got pretty excited about the Kings' prospects but it hasn't really materialized, you have Kopitar aging out (and Doughty is 32 as well), and I'm not sold on Korpisalo either.

I think it is less about everything going right just less wrong. Everything going right would be a Vezina level season from Markstrom and Huberdeau producing 115 points. That probably gets them top of the division.
A PPG season from Hubderdeau and career average save pct from Markstrom probably has them in the playoff picture.

Also, let's not forget last season wasn't just about things going wrong. There was a depressed feeling in the player's room from the coach which is now gone. There's hopefully going to be a much bigger focus on freedom of play and offense. The fourth line is gone (loved 'em but had to happen). There are a lot of things from a baseline standpoint that are going to be better about this year.
So even if those same things are wrong this year (highly unlikely) those other factors will have some benefit. Things like Markstrom being exactly as bad, Hubby under-delivering, etc. etc.

Wings grabbed Petry so they likely takes them out on Hanifin

Korpisalo signed with Ottawa. The Kings signed Talbot. They will be running a tandem of Talbot/Copley or Talbot/Rittich which is funny.

People rag on Calgary all the time but who wouldn't choose Calgary 10 times out of 10 if your choices are Buffalo and Detroit! lol.

No way the Flames should accept a proposal like 1st + Maata + avg prospect - they can do better than that at the deadline, without breaking a sweat.
There is value in acquiring Hanifin before the season starts, as that allows the team to integrate him into the system all year. That should add a premium to the deal. A fair deal (now) is to start with a deadline valuation, add a premium for getting him now, and maybe add a bit of a topper if there is some salary dump coming back.
But some of these garbage proposals being thrown around are non-starters.
|
On the other hand some are throwing out multiple top picks and prospects for the guy. Let's be real, the Chycrun deal is about all they can hope for, and I think Chycrun has slightly more value for offensive upside. And he took like a year to trade. Flames have time but not that kind of time.
I am in favor of taking all these guys to the deadline and with a good team, sign some and trade some. That's how you max out their value in terms of helping you win now and getting great returns.

Tells me they only wanted Hanifin if they could get him for a song if that is the pivot they took. Not much of a comparable between Petry and Hanifin.

Or yzerman said, we need a D, we are going to trade for Petry for "X" unless you guys have something you want to do for Hanifin. Which lines up with Sec's news about Conroy and scouts active on the weekend.
X = some gustav guy and a 4th.

Still Detroit prob isn't the best of places if he has kids or is thinking of having kids.

I dont believe in Huberdeau at all. And Markstrom even less. they haven't earned my blind faith. Not personally loosing us games all year would be an improvement. They were unwatchable!
I'm not gonna wish with this team. They are what they are to me until they prove different! I just hope I can watch a game next season without falling asleep or changing the channel.
