That’s a pretty appealing package.

If they can get Toffoli at 50% and it isn't working out then they will be able to salvage most of the value at the deadline I'd bet

It's U.S.A or bust for Hanifin isn't it? I think he'd look at Buffallo and be happy. That's a solid D corps they'd be putting him into.

Eat bread at his current cap hit following his most recent season probably doesn't have much value on the market.
Still young enough to be part of things if he figures his #### out.
I could see him being one of the guys that suffered a bit under Sutter last year.

Sorry, I meant Hanifin. Had Mangiapane on my mind since I believe next summer we'll see a similar situation with him on the way out with 1 year left.

It would also make sense for it to be Carolina if Conroy is waiting to see other offers… would not surprise me if they really only have Lindholm as their target. Since they’re pick being late in the draft, the flames could wait through a portion of the first round to see if there are better offers with higher picks involved. If not, they take the Carolina offer.
That first round pick from Carolina is low and he might be hoping someone like Pittsburgh steps up offering their first round pick (14th overall). They wouldn’t have a prospect/young player as good as Jarvis though so they would likely have to add another first round pick (2024/2025) to the package.

It works. My previous point was you'd get a better overall package getting 17th OA instead of 9th.

Would act as the backbone for an entirely new build of the Calgary Flames. I don't think retention is as important on Lindholm and Hanifin, because the teams that I'd expect to be targeting players like that (and going after long-term extensions) have the cap space available this year to easily swallow their sub-$5M salaries.
Maximizing returns on Backs, Toff, and Tanev though would be to ship those guys to contenders on the brink (Leafs, Rangers, Canes?) where they're likely looking to minimize salary intake at all costs.
This is why I hope Conroy does it this Summer. This is the tear down Summer in my eyes and provides us the shortest path to a new beginning.
Summer 2023: Rip down.
Season 2023/2024: No significant adds, trade off bits at the deadline, maximize your own 2024 1st round pick
Summer 2024: Do whatever. You want to go right back to spending like a mad-man in free agency? Fine...but at least we restocked in in 2023/2024.
|
And if you have a good young core, and potentially have a ton of cap space available you could potentially take advantage of what could be a strong UFA class in 2024 and 2025.
It's always subject to change due to re-signings but...
2024: Nylander, Matthews, Stamkos, Montour, Guentzel, Scheifele, Reinhart, Aho, Stephenson, Lindholm Debrusk, Toews
2024: Draisaitl, Rantanen, Marner, Kuzmenko, Verhaeghe, Buchnevich, Konecny, Boeser, Theodore, Bennett, Ekblad, EHlers
Of course not all these guys will make it to market. But you will have options to supplement a young core if you time this correctly and have the cap space available.

I'm sure Hanifin would be really pumped to play for Boston. Their 1st would be very late though, so not ideal. However, I could see their 1st in 2024 or 2025 being pretty good....

Backlund and Brodie were both RFAs when they signed their last contracts with the Flames.

Can't be a sign by Calgary until after the draft.
I think if Jarvis is involved (and he's a great get), you wouldn't in any event be getting the 30th and 62 in 2023 picks. Maybe a 2024 pick.
Jarvis is a huge get IMO.
