Would Conroy not have been building those relationships over the several years that he was working in an executive capacity for the Flames? Brad came into Calgary working under Maloney as an AGM and seemed to be pretty plugged in right away.

Leafs have one pick in the first four rounds...Brad might as well skip the draft anyway

Depends on his role, of course. Did we see him on the road and at league meetings much?

He was also a player so a lot of guys know him that way.

So, I'd disagree with your take.
Guess we're listening to different sources. Overdrive, That's Hockey, Sportsnet Hockey Central (or whatever the pre game is called), pods such as The Athletic Hockey Show, Ray & Dregs and so on.

Not all Toronto necessarily, but a lot of where I heard it is. But not surprising that some media outlets/reporters would see it different.

But when I hear them gloss over what forced him to make that move, it bothers me.

I feel like working under Brad who is allegedly the most plugged in GM in the league would provide at least some measure of that same access to Craig. Brad said as much today that he works very close with his employees at all levels. And as you mentioned Craig has a history of being someone in the NHL who is already very well liked.

I found that one interesting as well. How could he honestly say that after Conroy’s assessment of how things are done, along with the coaching rift? Hell of a politicians statement to say that when if he came down from his press box, he’d see the dressing room was in shambles. Anything for the cameras I guess.

That’s the bigger thing for me too. He compiled scouting reports and lists of players to target through trade or free agency, while on the Flames dime. Probably the same lists that the Flames management is also working off of going into the off-season. Now they are going to be competing against Treliving and the Leafs for these resources, and we know which market has the upper hand there. He also knows the inside info on which players may want out and can lowball the Flames based on that info.

That’s why I didn’t mind if the Flames prevented him from talking to other teams. It’s different if a GM is fired, but he chose to leave.

Getting serious jilted lover vibes from this thread the last couple days..

This will just give the Flames a bigger chip on their shoulder. Hopefully we cream T.O. next season.

Later picks? I would consider only two of those players "later picks". Anything in the top half of the draft is not a late pick. Also, if the amateur scouts are so good shouldn't we see more success than that listed? Shouldn't we also see more players signing pro contracts and sticking around to develop in the minors and into NHL players? You would think that a team that was so strong at the draft would not see so many players go unsigned and not enter the system that is already so thin.

When they asked Conroy about this, he mentioned that he knows a lot of people, through organizations across the NHL. Some that he may not know well, he has played against, so they have a starting point for a conversation. He says he knows at least someone in pretty much every organization. The guy has been in the NHL as a player and an AGM for decades. Plus he mentioned that his phone blew up with messages from many GMs across the league. He is a good communicator, and business is business.

But what does he know? I will go with what you are saying

Not directed at you, but the comment you were quoting. I have trouble believing that Conroy will struggle at forming working relationships with the other GMs around the league.

What do you think he's been doing for all of these years with Trelviing? What was Treliving doing for those years in Arizona? In those years under Burke? Sure, Conroy won't have the time in the role yet -- but I'm sure relationships around the executive offices across the league have been built in the nearly 9 years he spent under Treliving. Not to mention the people he'll know around the league from his playing days.

He won't be as plugged in as Treliving, not to start. But it's not like he's been disconnected all this time either.

Listened to some clips from the presser and I see Treliving still loves his management consulting terms, but doesn’t quite know how to use them.

“I’m coming in from an outside lens”.

Needs a year with McKinsey to clean that up.

So assume they keep him, one of Marner or Nylander must go. Marner is better and you’d get higher value but he doesn’t grow on trees. Nylander would get a decent return. Personally I think they ride or die with Matthews Marner combo in the years to come, and deal Nylander. When Tavares comes off the books in a couple seasons they’ll get the flexibility to pay Marner but you have to go with those two.
I disagree that McDavid & Draisaitl's contracts are the problem in Edmonton. If anything, those contracts are yielding very good value for the cap hit.

The problem is that the rest of the team is overpaid for how much the supporting cast actually delivers. Whether it's a premium to be paid because of the City of Edmonton, or an overpay because McDavid inflates everyone else's numbers.

Those terrible other contracts are the ones that prevent the team from winning a cup. Scoring has never been their problem. Forwards and defensemen who can keep pucks out of their own net is their biggest issue.

Yeah, I think any team in the league would take Leon and McDavid at their cap hits and then build a team around that. That's never been the Oilers problem, they are gifts in the hockey building world.

It's everything they've failed to do around them from day one that has led to the lack of success around a generational talent. Generational talent scores a million points but doesn't do much defensively? Build a ****ing defensive team and structure around him. Pay the price for a proven, high level starting goalie.

Build from the net out when they drafted him and they'd be smelling like roses. But nope, had to go all 80's Oilers and keep adding offensive player after offensive player because they were excited fan boys instead of practical managers.

Catching up on some of the media coverage today...and its hilarious. Brad thought Calgary was tough. They are already saying Brad basically has to bend to Shanahan's will and bring back the coach and the same core.

For all those people bitching at the way the Flames operated for Treliving leaving, he has has now landed in a place with way more media scrutiny and by the sounds of it more meddling into his GM affairs. Leads me to believe that was never the core issue in Calgary anyways. I think Brad had his sights set on this job for a while just for the prestige of being in the NHL's biggest market.
