Holy high-praises from Tkachuk, Batman.
Quote:
Brad Treliving hadn't yet been officially hired as general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, but he'd already received a note of congratulations from Matthew Tkachuk.
"I saw on Twitter that he was going to be named, so I sent him a text right away," the Florida Panthers forward told NHL.com. "He's an awesome guy and a great GM. He'll do great there."
Of all the endorsements Treliving received regarding his new position, which was announced early Wednesday afternoon, the one from Tkachuk is among the most intriguing, if not the most telling.
|
Quote:
"I don't really know what happened there in Calgary, but I know I liked my time with him," Tkachuk said. "He was super great to all the players and everybody.
"And yeah, in my case, it was definitely the opposite of player versus GM. There was no animosity. It was like us working together for a solution for both. I'm super thankful to have a guy like that and a guy like [Panthers GM] Bill Zito, who's been unbelievable to deal with, as shown by the fact we were able to figure it out.
"Bill and Tree have been obviously tremendous in my career so far and getting me to where I am."

Instead, Treliving, as others have mentioned, wasn't really a guy that thought about the future, he was a "now" GM. Hence why we always spent up to the cap with middling players and our stars getting hurt for raises in the long run. It wasn't until we lost Johnny, traded Tkachuk, and dumped Monahan for a 1st that we finally had cap space again, only for Treliving to use it all up for Huberdeau and Weegar's contracts. Lucic's contract finally expiring? Doesn't matter, Huberdeau takes it all. We're in the same mess, and it's because of Treliving.

0.0% chance.
Look at the other deals for similar players signed that off-season. 2, 3, 5, 6 years were the options. Kyle Connor being the lone exception, but there is no reason to believe Tkachuk would bungle it like that.

I don't hate Treliving, but I hate the Maple Leaf, so I wish him nothing but professional failure.
He does love his veteran guys, so I see a recipe for disaster as he trades pick after pick for old guys that don't pan out.
He is good at drafting though, I will give him that.
I wonder if him, Gio & Brodie will have sleepovers and reminisce about the good ol days.

Treliving is a really solid GM and will do well in Toronto.
His biggest mistakes in Calgary were not getting the right coach for the roster and bridging Tkachuk instead of finding a way to get a long term deal done.
I still live in a fantasy land where this team’s core is Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Hamilton, Bennett, Fox. Man, that would have been a dream.

Not sure it’s been discussed but I thought Trees most interesting comment was about the importance of relationships and team ship… not necessarily a shot at Sutter, but just something that was lacking in Calgary between coach and GM.
In addition Conroy mentioned Trees lack of mgmt teamwork inclusion in some instances whereby he felt Tree made decisions alone.
Just some observations

Yeah, I suspect it wouldn't have been 8 years (Tkachuk himself said "6,7,8" as long term) and the fact his last year was $9M and his QO was $9M tells you a lot about what he expected going forward.
I think maybe at best he'd have gotten the same 7 for the first two years and then 4 at 9.5. And after Covid he'd have demanded a trade anyway. Frankly, they may have both had that wage regimen in mind and then Covid hit and Tkachuk changed his tune.

I think this has some truth to this, which would suggest that he signed those long-term contracts to strap the Flames on his way out.

Why would he do that?
Why would he intentionally screw a team that he worked with for a long time and still employs people he cares deeply about?
For shiggles?

Sec217 mentioned that the Huberdeau signing was something that ownership pushed for. IIRC, a lot of people were OK with the signing last offseason

That's ridiculous. Nothing in Treliving's pattern of behaviour indicates anything like that kind of underhanded thinking.
After the trade was made a ton of posters insisted that the deal was a failure UNLESS Huberdeau and Weegar were signed long term.

The pause for concern is going from a first time GM to another first time GM as Conroy has never been the man before and he's likely to make his own mistakes unrelated to those of the past regime like any first time GM may. It's impossible to say where this is going to go as it could be a disaster but it's not impossible that he does as good or better than Treliving.

One area Conroy will be weaker than Treliving initially is relationships. Treliving is said to be the most plugged-in GM in the league, who has frequent communications with all of his peers and a finger on the pulse of what every team needs and is looking for. Conroy is a personable guy, but it will take time for him to build up those relationships and trust.

The GM community is small and if one of them plays dirty it comes back to haunt them. Hell, Burke was furious at Lowe for a legal offer sheet.

One thing that was interesting was the talk about a collaborative effort and team and when Conroy talked about Brad he mentioned how he liked to do a lot of things alone especially contracts.
Will be interesting how this arrangement works and if he will be able to work in a environment with someone like Shanahan.

Would Conroy not have been building those relationships over the several years that he was working in an executive capacity for the Flames? Brad came into Calgary working under Maloney as an AGM and seemed to be pretty plugged in right away.
