It isn't surprising if they have a "can't say the word 'rebuild'" pseudo-policy, as rebuilds are politically touchy with fans. And are a challenge with selling tickets and seasons tickets.
But that doesn't mean they are against against rebuilds. It is far more likely that the view is: "we'll do a rebuild when we need to, but don't use the word publicly".

Just call it “building through the draft” then, not a rebuild. Just building a good long-term team through the draft. Case closed, but regardless- that’s what needs to be done. Call it whatever you want, but just go do that.

Finally got a chance to watch the presser. That John Bean fella should not be anywhere near a mic for the organization. Good lord.

Wouldn’t it be a mistake to declare a strategy before your GM search anyway? IMO that’s part of the interview - what would be your vision for the team and why?
Guessing, but Bean probably just has a terrible joke delivery.

Also .. it's Sutter's fault that Valimaki worked his way down the depth chart on the farm team? He didn't do well down there last year either.

I do think Canadian hockey fans are smarter than that.

TBF, the post about that was partly untrue. It is correct that Edwards does not usually speak at annual investor events. But, he has appeared as a panelist at past AGMs, and a few quarterly employee shareholder meetings, speaking at length.
I attended a couple AGMs within the past five years and he was there both times. He comes across as intelligent and a strong speaker, and you can't really argue with the success CNRL has had.
At the same time, I'm not defending his role with the Flames -- the mediocre long-term results speak for themselves and ownership is ultimately accountable. Whether the team's performance is partly due to meddling from Edwards, I don't know, but where there's smoke there's usually fire.
If he is too hands-on, he needs to stay in his lane and let hockey people do their thing. But, I highly doubt whatever the current dynamic is changes much moving forward.

I can't find any stats to back that up myself, but I guess them being in biz means they get access to better stats than we do. If some stat wiz can find something to corroborate the above, thumbs up to you.

Because they almost always took the shot instead of making a pass. This seems to be one of the most mis-understood stats out there. They were high on off the rush 'chances', but they were low on off the rush scoring. Because the mandate was to shoot the puck, or make a safe play.

I'm 14 minutes into the press conference and as Bean is talking I am swearing at the screen in disbelief that this guy is involved in any of this.

I wonder who it is in the organization that does not allow Bean to say the word rebuild, fire that guy. The owners will be pissed that that person is running the hockey team.

First of all, we don't know what Valimaki is yet.
But more to the point, Valimaki didn't look like he would develop into Valimaki either, even 6 months ago!

Our opinions of Valimaki dropped after Sutter was hired, but certainly many thought Valimaki had the tools to be a star prior.
Comparing that to our defensive prospect pool now, I suppose you could say Poirier has the tools to be a star in the league, but has a ways to go defensively.
