It's a sad day, but a great day IMO. Treliving needed to go. It's been obvious for a couple of years. The team needed to show their cards to let the fans know who as in charge and it is clearly Sutter who is running the show. Decisions the last few days have made that obvious. There will be a few fans that are happy, but for the most part the fan base can't be too stoked by this revelation. We know what the players think, so major change is about to come. Hopefully that will be a good thing in the long run.

Don Maloney and John Bean do not look like high end guys you want helping with this turnaround. No confidence in these two

Maybe it is partly Sutter's fault that young players are sucking in training camp. Can you point to any young players that have excelled and made the team under Sutter in training camp?
The only one I can think of was Oliver Kylington at 23 years old. Again a player who they put on waivers and exposed in the expansion draft since he "sucked" playing for Sutter.
Zary was good and didn't make the team (which I get, but he didn't get a look later on either). Same with Poirier.

I think he would be a good choice. And to anyone who thinks he's too nice, that just isn't the case - he is pretty intense, very focused, and has been a big part of their negotiating team for some time.

I was taught early on in my career that a sign of a great leader is a leader that can be pulled away from a job or project and the job goes on seamlessly or better then when you were there. It contradicts everyone’s ego in that you would like to see it all fail because you were so vital to the operation that they cannot go on without you.
I’m really praying that Tre has mentored Craig Conroy with that attitude in mind. I hope that Conroy changes the direction of the team and honestly would love to see Iggy behind the bench similar to the Martin St. Louis situation.

First of all, it takes more than one year to get to the bottom. Second, other than a brief stint of historical ineptitude, triggered by the Oilers, the first overall pick is a good player pretty much every year. Here are the last 20 years:
2003: Fleury..... 2013:MacKinnon
2004: Ovechkin 2014: Ekblad
2005: Crosby... 2015: McDavid
2006: Staal..... 2016: Matthews
2007: Kane..... 2017: Hischier
2008: Stamkos 2018: Dahlin
2009: Tavares.. 2019: Hughes
2010: Hall....... 2020: Lafreniere
2011: RNH...... 2021: Power
2012: Yakupov. 2022: Slatkovsky
Every year, the draft gets deeper and deeper. And every year, the scouts, collectively, get better at sorting out talent.
|
It truly is the most Enoch Root thing ever to take a throwaway one liner and critique it with a breakdown of twenty years of the NHL draft.

I'll grant that using the word star (even "borderline star") is a stretch, but that's a really useful player to lose for nothing.

Massive stretch. Useful player for nothing is much more appropriate

I don't disagree with you. I have become more indifferent towards him leaving. I just feel that whenever the games were biggest, including the playoffs, he was rarely noticeable offensively.
Still happy to have him as a Flame, at a decent price without too much term (both unlikely), but do not want to see him get a giant contract.

Valimaki may not be quite a star yet but the Flames don't have any defensive prospect that looks like he could develop into anything like what Valimaki is now. The biggest organizational void is probably young defencemen, and the Flames gave that up for nothing.

At this point, I'm 100% on board with Conroy as GM. Why has he been with us for this long if not for this moment? Playing experience, AGM experience, Flames experience, and all around amazing guy. Sign me up. He's proven he has an eye for talent, has the charisma to attract talent, and (reading into things) must have a fond love for the Calgary Flames.
Things are going to get incredibly sticky if Sutter stays, but I think Conny could handle it. I'm absolutely a glass half empty guy normally, so as a fan of this team I'm hoping we get one of the most likable Flames ever as our next GM to quell this massively negative moment. Please Edwards, go against your better judgment and make this happen.

Ok great, that's fantastic. My issue was the insane hyperbole used.

In absolutely no way is it an insane hyperbole to say Valimaki had a borderline star-level season.
if semantics are that important to you.
An organization that frequently took Ls in the last calendar year took one here.

Hot Take: I blame lack of scoring a little bit more than goaltending for this season. Better goaltending would've definitely helped the team win more games. But how many times did we watch the team fail to get that extra goal? Or have someone come in and take over a game? The lack of elite offensive talent was a backbreaker this year

Do you think Kylington had a borderline star season last year? I don't and don't think Valimaki did this year either. He'd have to be a game breaker for that to be true.

I think the abysmal powerplay killed a lot of the team's swagger, mainly Huberdeau and Kadri. Although Gaudreau and Tkachuk had insane ES seasons last year, they were also very good on the PP, and I think that helped them gain the confidence they needed 5v5.
Lots to blame this season - not just Darryl.

For the first half of last season, I'd say Kylington certainly did have a borderline star season.
At the same time, Valimaki has faced a higher quality of competition this year than Kylington last year and produced strong results.
