They're too up against the cap to add to the current group or afford extensions for Backlund and Lindholm, who evidently would need convincing to stay.
The next GM needs to be in sell mode right off the hop.
Load up for 3-5 years from now when DW is a top goalie in the league. Build from the goalie out and let Huby and Kadri mentor the young talent.
When McDavid leaves AB and Edmonton is in shambles, the Flames can be already on the way up to being a great team with a good foundation of talent.

I actually feel they are in a decent position to lay some great groundwork, given all those UFAs that are up in 2024 ... you could realistically get some great value for some of them this summer. Inject some youth, promote Mitch Love, see where that takes you. Not going to happen, but it would excite me a lot more than Sutter sticking around, tbh.

Leaving the team with 1 goalie, 3 defensemen, and 3 forwards :>

Jesus. Almost as embarrassing as his remarks around the arena negotiations.
JM had 1 strong season and two subpar seasons as a Flame.
The body of work speaks for itself. His ceiling might be higher than any one on the team but his floor has proven to be pretty low when he's not feeling it, which is frequently these days.

They absolutely need to take advantage of the situation and do the right thing.

Saw that coming.
Think Sutter will be stay.
I’d bet Lindholm is next.
Wild guess is Markstrom is somehow shipped out as well.

There will be many teams taking advantage of this situation - sadly, the Flames will not be one of them.
Other teams are drooling to drop their overpaid grinders on the Flames for the talent that is left in Calgary.
Yay GM Sutter!

Just as a counter-point to the "no rebuild" narrative since people jumped on Bean for saying he wasn't allowed to say the word, it's worth remembering that he also said they considered it last year and there would be a time to consider again, but the first priority was evaluating what went wrong.

I, however, don't see how that happens with Sutter coaching. Maybe just have the GM straight up tell Sutter that's what he's working with, and not sign any vets. Lewis, Lucic, and Ritchie are all gone, which is a huge start to forcing Sutter's hand on playing the youth.
|
Well you can probably rest easy.. "giving it another go" is par for the course with Edwards, and is much easier than making a plan for long-term success and executing it.

I still think Treliving has more than eyes on other roles that are or are likely to become available.
Not saying the situation was warm and fuzzy here, but I'm guessing it was a hard choice. But likely on advice from people like Burke, maybe his tenure here was enough as far as accomplishing things as well.
So, ideally he'd stay but with a heavy heart he moves on, and wish him the best. There are lots of organizations where the grass appears greener, but isnt.
I think he knows that but for all the issues fans have, many other organizations have with something (similar or different) else that's complicated and affects the roster or dynamics.
From Frideman's peice, clearly a disconnect within the room. Given the exit interviews, and the general playbon the ice, sounds like the Swedes somewhat fell out of favour, with the coach, or new players, or both.
If Conroy is GM, should be an interesting dynamic.
