Whenever Treliving did good, he would somehow find a way to counteract it with something bad.
9 years with a GM and making playoffs half of those years isn't exactly doing a great job.
|
Now compare how much Sutter was paid to the coaches Treliving signed due to the budget he was given. Were they equal? If he had 2+ mill to spend on a coach, would he have still gone with Gulutzan, Peters, or Ward?

Sutter was a winner at one point in his career. Not anymore.

This just feels like Sutter winning the powerplay and he is going to sink the franchise once again.
Edwards will hire a GM that aligns with his chosen head coach.
We saw the look on the players faces and the comments this is not going to help the organization.
Not sure what this organizations obsession is with Darryl Sutter.
Wouldn't be surprised if Huberdeau, Lindholm and Backlund ask for trades in the offseason.
Ugly day.

This is worst case scenario, especially if Sutter stays on. Frustrating year as a flames fan just gets worse IMO.

I agree Sutter probably crossed over into that territory too much this season.
But I'm not going to presume the future is a disaster if Sutter stays. He's a great hockey mind and coach.
Personally I'm not attached to a lot of what the Flames had in place. 2 first round wins in 10 years, with a team that should have been a contender.
I'm not sure what people are hanging on to. Let's see some changes and see what happens.

Not sure why people are upset about Sutter still being here. He is under contract for years to come, he's going to be the default coach until the new regime is chosen. The new GM will decide who the coach will be, in the meantime the team isn't going to undermine Sutter that would just be dumb. For the record I would like Sutter to ride off into the sunset but that isn't going to happen today.

I've already stated I thought he was a good GM, but your comment is 100% bang on re: coaches. You can pick a part every trade any GM made, but the sum of Tre's work on the player trade and build part IMO is really good.
Where he constantly failed as a GM was coach selection. I have no idea if that's the hardest part of the GMs job, maybe as a newer GM he was learning that. But potentially, that could be the root cause of the apparent disconnect here. If he's no longer feeling Sutter is the person (or he never did), that's likely what has driven the parting of ways if ownership is no longer willing to give him leeway on coaching selection because those past failures. Gulutzan and full season of Ward post Peters were awful coaching choices that cost this team big time.
That said, I'd have preferred if we let Tre continue to try and find his way on that one and give him the empowerment to make his calls. But that's completely speculative that the coach is what this is about, it might not be.

Bad today and maybe no way out of it.

We finally fully agree on something.
Ugly day indeed.
Seems likely a puppet GM that will be a yes man to Edwards and Sutter is on the way.

The worst news is when the team keeps Sutter that means this team try compete for the playoffs for the next 2 years. So they will try to trade the players who wants out for some kind of similar player with salary and term. Or they try to overpay to keep them.
No future, all for this year for any cost

He's one season removed from the Jack Adams.

With the season ticket renewals around the corner, I’m genuinely on the fence of if I want to keep them this year. Depressing day for sure

I've seen it many times in the professional, non-sports world and these sorts of people are not easy to find and they make teams better and happier, full stop.

Further to this, his support of Chris Snow through his battle with ALS has been amazing.
This feels like a dark day for the organization.

This truly has me questioning whether or not I want to be a fan of this team.
I have never seen an organization less honest with itself on its ability to compete.
I don't think they care about competing. It's hard to make me care.
Truly that's not a state of mind I want to be in as a fan. It sounds bad. I hope for better, but this isn't fun to watch. It isn't fun to follow.
But maybe caring less about the Flames, whether they win, whether they get a new building - maybe it's best if I just don't care anymore.

It's hard for me to overlook:
- Johnny Gaudreau walks away from Calgary
- Matthew Tkachuk informs Calgary he won't re-sign
- Mikael Backlund indicates he's unlikely to re-sign
- Elias Lindholm when asked if he'd re-sign "I have one year left, that's all I'll say"
- Brad Treliving walks away
It's hard to think things are going well for the Calgary Flames when THAT many high performing/quality individuals walk away from the organization.
Treliving walking away just makes me think things are in a bad spot, and that (pessimistically) the organization isn't self-aware enough to begin to correct them.

I don’t think anyone who takes the job will be given the freedom to choose their own coach.
Sutter is Edwards’ guy. That’s not going to change at least for another year or two. That means they’re stuck with either Maloney or Conroy because no one else would be willing to put up with that level of ownership interference.

I can assure you there was nothing mutual about this decision. And, this is also not the Flames choosing the coach over the GM. Right now, everything being spun by the Flames is saving face from the fact that a GM no longer wanted to be here even though he was offered a lucrative extension and the authority to fire Sutter.
Brad chose to leave. This team is a dumpster fire and he is getting out when he can. Its an impossible team to recruit players to, and combine that with the meddling owners?
They will probably keep Sutter to make it look like this was their choice. But, its not.
