Because the coach has a two year extension and probably wasn't Tre's choice to begin with.

And in the end this is the biggest issue with the news today.
Our idiot owner decided to side with the coach that all the players hate, instead of the GM and giving that GM autonomy.

Lot's of chatter about Edwards being the one to bring in Sutter and that Sutter and Treliving butted heads.
Lost in all this is that Edwards may have been the one to bring Sutter back, but this is due to Trelivings inability to hire a competent coach and waste a lot of good years with a talented roster.
Whenever Treliving did good, he would somehow find a way to counteract it with something bad.
9 years with a GM and making playoffs half of those years isn't exactly doing a great job.

This all smells of a 'coach vs GM' struggle and the coach won out.
This off season is shaping up to be disastrous. I can't see how the team is going to be any better to start next season.
In fact it wouldn't be too shocking to add 4 or 5 Lewis, Rooney, and Ritchie type players. Cementing the status of the Flames as a 'Sutter club'.
My only hope is they figure out the next GM ASAP and its someone who can come in and not be bullied by the owners or coach, not that Tre was, but we need a GM who will put THEIR team together.
For those of you that are happy with this news, who do you have pegged to come in and replace Tre? At first glance everyone available seems like a down grade

That's not really lost at all in this. This was the speculation from the beginning when Sutter came back. Today just made it certain.

Yup, Tre lost autonomy two years ago when Sutter was hired. He was just hanging on. Now poor performance and poor contracts....

Great guy. May not mean he's a good future GM. But maybe he is? I have no clue.
|
So accurate. Do any of us fans have a clue? No. We have to trust that the teams front office personnel hires have merit. The few exceptions are if they hire someone who has a terrible track record, but if they promote an assistant GM or hire someone without much experience how are we to correctly judge?

Regardless of who the next GM hired is if this team goes forward with Arizona Don and Sutter steering this ship I suspect we’ll be looking back at this year and barely missing the playoffs with fond memories.
That’s fine that BT left but the direction this organization seems to be continuing on feels overwhelmingly crappy. Saving some money to lose more money, good luck with a new arena, is the goal to go full Major League and force a move?

I want the organization to demand excellence. Agree with his methods or not, Sutter demands that. If there's a GM that aligns with him it could lead to tangible results.

Interesting that Francis insinuating some people in the organization toughed out the locker room stuff because of Treliving and now he's gone they will want out.

I respected Treliving's willingness to go all-in on some moves and to have some guts, but I'll also remember him for replacing Hartley with Gulutzan.
He had his share of pretty awful moves too.

One thing we could have been certain about is Sutter's status as coach. The owner wasn't going to let Sutter be fired before Sutter's 3 year extension kicked in. Be upset that Sutter is here and Treliving isn't but the writing was on the wall for Sutter's return.

One of the most disappointing things about this is the quality of person that Tre is and the high level of empathy he has for everyone. Led this organization with complete class during the Bill Peters fiasco and right from the start of his tenure as GM, he always made a point to bring the human element of things to consider when talking about the players or staff, whether it be about contract negotiations, their play on the ice or their lives away from the rink. I've seen it many times in the professional, non-sports world and these sorts of people are not easy to find and they make teams better and happier, full stop.

I see Sutter more in the toxic boss mould than demanding excellence. You can demand excellence and not be a dick. Working for an awful boss makes everything worse.

Let them out, I would be fine with the Flames trading players for futures.

I'm a pretty optimistic guy but this seems like a Feaster hire kind of bad day for this organization.
I grant a lot of leeway for how things turn out if I can see the plan when the decision is made. Hockey is a tough sport to build because of the chemistry and unity required.
But when you don't like what's happening at the top it's not a good feeling.
Bad today and maybe no way out of it.
