In my estimation they've pretty consistently showed up all season. Just don't get the results due to a lack of finish and/or goaltending.
Tonight you can pretty much guarantee 60+% of shot attempts, shots and scoring chances. But do they only score one goal?
|
So you are saying lack of talent

I can never take the Coyotes serious. We got this one, easy peasy.
Let's go Flames
Let's go Hurricanes
Let's go Red Wings
Let's go Senators

Correct. Before Marky turned it around recently, the Flames as a team played very well, were often let down by goaltending. Recently, Marky has stolen some games.

We pounded this college team last time we played it just seemed bad because it was 3-1 for a while and we couldn't buy a goal, but in the end we busted through and netted 5 goals leaving the 2000 Flames Fans in attendance happy and the 2 Coyotes fans upset. One of them called it a playoff atmosphere lol.

Third period with 33 shot attempts, 15 shots and 9 high danger chances seems pretty desperate to me.
This isn't specifically on you, but I swear some judge games by the outcome only.
Like the shoot out win in Minnesota was lauded as a great game by the radio and print media when the Flames should have lost that game 4-1.

I've trotted out a lack of one on one talent making the creation of high danger opportunities rare many times.

I don't think effort is an issue either they are executing what is being asked of them.
Not being dangerous enough makes it seem like they are not trying, that is the question is how do we take that step to turn volume into more quality and danger and take that next step, are we coached to play it safe and rely on the shot volume breaking through.

I think for sure there could be an issue with shot volume as a goal.
But the creation of high danger to me, is less on systems and more on individual skill and creativity.
So 30/70 split in my mind between coach and players for chance generation.

Agreed, effort won’t be a problem. Can they get solid goaltending and capitalize on scoring chances is more the question.

Biggest issue is the lack of actual goals AKA finishing and execution, not effort, which highlights our lack of natural goal scorers.
Don't really have one that can be a threat to score 40+ every year or a committee of two or more 35+ guys. Toffoli and Lindholm are your best bets right now and that's not really cutting it, neither are even close to scratching the top 30 for goal scorers in the league. Edmonton have McDingleberries and Raisaitl who don't exactly move the needle defensively but if you have the #1 and #2 point leaders in the league on your team then I guess it doesn't matter.
So as a result, great chances are being saved, hitting the post, deflecting away/out etc. None of those nice bar-down shots that we love to see

There was stat from December that said our slot chances went from 5th to 25th in the NHL.
I don't think its a stat we can find because TSN used some sub service to get it.
They asked about it but the question was skirted around, but it would be interesting know why our slot play as decreased so much if that stat is indeed true.

This is exactly the issue in my opinion. Players need to do more than just dump the puck into the goalies chest more often than not. There is too much catch and shoot versus quick releases/passes that tend to create more chaos and take advantage of players out of position.
