I wonder how much Smith had been paid under the table from Katz private funds, to keep quiet about all this. Given how intense he is it has to be a whole lot more than you think.
It's clear cap circumvention, given the stories about him wanting to play next year right after they got swept. The pressure from the media to retire didn't work, and then everyone went quiet until he didn't show today.

Recall the Oilers are the color they are because the owners hoped they'd get some money from Gulf Canada to sponsor the team back in the 70s so they made these to help intice the company. Gulf was much smarter than that, said no, but the team kept the jerseys that color anyway.

Campbell only on town early because of the once a week direct flights from Toronto to the bush plane airport up there.

Middleton wore 67 when he broke into the league, but switched to 21 prior to last season. The Oilers didn't have a player wearing 21 last season, so I'm not sure why they would have done his jersey with 67 and not 21.
They were likely playing the odds that the player would want to keep the same number after the trade that he was wearing before (or reverse the digits in Staal's case).
The only explanation that makes any sense for why those jerseys exist is the Oilers were in the market for a d-man at the deadline and those players were the most-likely candidates (plus Kulak, who they actually acquired). They were on a short road trip at the trade deadline, so they probably had the equipment staff prepare road jerseys for each of the players just in case they were acquired and to save the equipment staff from the hassle of preparing the jersey while on the road. Funnily enough, Kulak was the player they acquired, and he didn't join the team until after that short trip was over anyway.
There is a logical reason for them to exist, what's crazy is the decision to sell them to the public 6 months later.
|
Zero explanation. This isn't 1981 anymore. Teams travel with spare jerseys and name and numbers, and my guess is also extra letters. Teams have been on the road for decades during trade deadlines and have been able to get jerseys done up for newly acquired players.
Just a mix of ego and hubris and borderline tampering to do those jerseys up assuming they will get any of those players. My guess is it was part of Lowe and his sales pitch to the player over Zoom, saying we are ready for you to join us and want you so bad, we already have a jersey for you done up, we are that confident in you...or something similarly hokey that Lowe truly believe works because it worked on Ken Linseman back in 1983 when Slats did it.
Unsurprisingly, also a lack of professionalism and incompetance to leave them as is more than 1 day post deadline, let alone sell them to the public months later.

Something I don't understand is how insurance companies seem to also be victims of these clumsy LTIR schemes... Are they not the ones who pay LTIR salaries? Seems like they got bilked. I'm obviously missing something.

Oilers preseason banner in trouble. Currently down 3 zip to the kraken. That's a shame. Everything was going so well.

It is if you're using Planck units.
For those who may not know, Planck units are a system of measurements based on the fundamental constants of the universe. Since E=NG is a fundamental constant of the universe, you can use it to measure no-goodness on the cosmic scale.
The measuring unit derived from E=NG is called the mullet. It is generally agreed that the micromullet is the largest unit of no-goodness suitable for everyday use. The average CP flamewar measures 5 micromullets. Donald Trump's comb-over is about 300 micromullets. The war in Ukraine is so no-good that it registers at several thousand micromullets.
As no-goodness approaches the limit of 1 mullet, women develop bruises on their legs, sewer gas belches into the atmosphere, and even the ground itself subsides towards the earth's core in embarrassment.
And then, of course, people start cheering for the Oilers.

My understanding is that insurance on players is really expensive and teams only take out policies on select high paid players and that most players aren't insured. Even the ones that are insured will typically only have part of their salaries covered.
I could be wrong. I don't have any personal knowledge on how it works. I just recall reading it somewhere before.

1. Not all contracts are insured.
2. For those that are, the more a team uses LTIR, the more its premiums go up. The Golden Knights, for instance, have an insurance record comparable to a 17-year-old boy with three DUIs who is still inexplicably allowed to drive Daddy's Porsche.

I'm willing to bet that they have arranged a cozy post-playing career job in the organization for being a team player wink wink. IMO the NHL needs to start using independent doctors only for all players that start the season on LTIR.

Absolutely agree with this. No different than the Duncan Keith retirement to be a "Development" coach. Guessing that position is paying him the same cash value his contract would have this year.
Oilers are a trash organization that will cheat, lie or sell out all in the name of "winning" which makes it all the more hilarious.

It didn't look right but it wouldn't have worked as a disguise with a player's helmet. Using a blocker and catcher and smashing a goalie stick over his back wouldn't have worked as well either. Earlier on it was a mannequin.

What does failing his physical even mean? That an injury prevented him from continuing or that he was out of shape?
If so, all Katz needed to do was send a case of beer and 3 pizzas to Mike Smith every day throughout summer.

Mike Smith is an old man now. I'm sure he's legitimately injured. It may be possible to play through the injury but it's still an injury.
The best part for me is that after ridding themselves of Smith's injury, they turned around and gave it all (and more) to Jack Campbell! Campbell is a scrub. At least Smith was great in short streaks.

No no, you see, the fact he has played so few games actually means he has years left of being a generational goalie. It's the inverse McJesus. So he is actually "younger" than #1's his age because everyone knows goalies don't have a biological age, they have a lifetime game count.
That is literally their copium for the fact that soup has never played more than last year and completely fell apart. That and the fact that they have what the fans consider one of the best D in the league. I will never be so sure of something in my life, as an oilers fan is sure of their greatness, in the face of all stats and reality telling them otherwise.
