If it's a shorter term deal, does that AAV come in lower or higher than a 6-7 year deal?
|
In this case, lower because you aren't buying UFA years. Unlike UFA where you are offering lower AAV but more money over an 8 year deal because no one else can do it.

Only if the arbitrator awards him a salary greater than $4,538,958. That's not happening for Phillips.

If memory serves me correct Mangiapane tried this too.
Ended up signing a two way contract. I think it is a bad move by phillips but not devastating.
He has proved nothing at the NHL level. Yet arbitration does gaurantee a contract. It still will be a two way contract. Flames will probably bump up his AHL salary a bit and he will sign before the arbitrator rules.
No harm no foul. I would love to see the guy get a chance playing in the top six in training camp.
I dont think he makes the big club but would love to be wrong.
Pelletier, Ruzicka, and Phillips making the team would sure help out the cap moving forward. Add Mackey to that mix too. Guy deserves a super long look.
I would like to say Valimaki deserves a shot too. Yet I am not sure of that.
A few years ago he looked great. Has not been the same player since. I want to be wrong here in a big way.

Mangiapane is really a fastensting player in terms of valuation. Theres a pretty wide gap between what the eye test and the analytics people think he is worth. I hesr s lot of he's not a 5 million a year player..analytics guys seem to hope he comes in at 6 or less, but won't divulge their expected value.
Adrian Kempe is a pretty logical comparison in terms of last year's counting numbers. But over the past three years, Eat Bread's even strength and analytics are very strong.
No doubt Rich Winter is circling in the water to get a Jeff Skinner contract here. I'm conflicted as I do think he's been what eversges out to a 30 goal guy for two years without premium ice time and line mates. But on a a real contender would you play him on a top line thinking he'll score 40 goals? I don't, so that brings the first number under 7 for me. But on a 4 year deal, I would consider in the sixes for sure.

For all we know, Phillips may want out. He has been in the AHL for 4 seasons now, and has only one game to show for it. Maybe he feels like there is some roadblock here to his career moving forward?
Personally, I don't think he gets a shot in Calgary unless he forces Sutter's hand in camp/preseason. I don't he has shown enough at the AHL level, especially considering that he doesn't offer the Flames much else if he is not going to be a scorer. We will see what happens, but I am betting they never go to arbitration and this was just a 'just in case' thing for him.

Fortunately, it's a very small roadblock. Only 5'7 and 140 pounds.

Phillips is just ensuring that he gets a substantial raise from the $80k he earned last year.
Froese, Kirkland, Gawdin, Philp, etc. all got substantial raises this year. Philp is now at $250k and the rest are north of $450k.
Lil Matty might still be an RFA, but he is better than all of those players and should be paid accordingly or at least on par with those guys.

It's hard to imagine how a player who has played one NHL game (and an end-of-season garbage game at that) would have any case for a one-way contract.

Phillips broke the all time Stockton scoring record by 10 points last year, and has improved defensively year over year. It's not his fault he has not seen NHL time.

All-time record? You mean of the 5 full seasons they had?
Derek Grant had 45 points in 36 games. Mangiapane had 46 points in 39 games, even Quine had 52 points in 41 games.
So congrats to him on beating Agostino's 57 in 65 but a point-per-game in the AHL isn't something that automatically means you should be in the NHL. It's still his "fault".

Man I hope Phillips gets a shot..I actually hope he germts a 1 way deal. If he doesn't make our team I'd like to see him get a chance on another roster.

With Gaudreau gone this could be the best opportunity for Matthew Phillips. I still think he’s too small for the NHL game but this could be his last chance if the Flames give him a few games and see how he does.

hoping for a contentious arbitration hearing like Risebough/Gilmour leading to a trade demand, and Bratt joining the Swedish mafia

So arbitrator will award 5.325 if it gets to a hearing. It's the easiest job in sports....95% of time you show up and no hearing. When you do show...you just go in the middle.

That seems like a really low team filing. $6.5 is right on the money for Bratt.

Someone please remind me. I thought the arbitrator had to pick one of the offers. The arbitrator can't split the difference - or is that in baseball?
