I have a feeling not much work has been done on signing Mangiapane.

In a way Mangiapane is in a better position than Tkachuk. He has produced mainly without Gaudreau and mainly even strength. He seems to have some upward growth potential still, given his minutes and progression. He can argue a long term deal is worth it. And other teams probably see that too.

Mangiapane has 132 career points
Tkachuk had 104 this season
He is not anywhere near a better position

I think Winter just said that he won't get into details but admitted that Mangiapane has submitted his multi-year proposal to the Flames? He wants to stay in Calgary for the "long term - longer term".

I think he means in terms of his value in relation to Gaudreau.
Mangiapane's production is what it is, and his value doesn't really change with Gaudreau going.
With Tkachuk, there will be obvious questions around how much of his production was helped by Gaudreau and what his actual value is going forward.

Mangiapane's production likely doesn't change, or goes up. Tkachuk - there are question marks. I'm not saying Mangiapane gets more. But he's in a better spot to ask for his number and term.

Both C's and both younger. Fiala would be the better comp.

Had to drop for a meeting, but to that point, some things I remember:
- He's talked through scenarios with Mang with actual examples like Pacioretty is done next year, so maybe a spot opens up beside Aho? Maybe Toronto wants to add next year if they end up moving Nylander out? But also mentioned the opportunity he has in Calgary which Mangiapane likes - he thinks he will get more looks on PP1, what if he gets a shot on line 1 with Chucky and Lindholm? Talks specifically about Chucky being very underrated as a passer and how Mangiapane is good at finding holes and converting.
- Talked about the risk of doing a 1-year deal and then getting injured, but also says if he can get 35 again next year, he'll command even more on the market
- Francis asked him if Canadian teams can even do anything about losing free agents and players to the American market, but I had to drop so missed all of that

I hope Mang gets rewarded with a Marchand-like boost in his numbers if he stays long-term.

Sounds like a well thought out process. If I was Mangiapane I would bet on myself. His logic about PP1 and the first line is spot on. Back to back 30+ goal seasons allow him to get north of 6 million east on the open market. If he hits 40 goals he is probably looking at north of 7 million. Tough to leave that kinda upside on the table for anything less than close to 6 million at this point in time.

Mangiapane hasn't made life altering money yet. Hopefully he's more open to accepting a long term deal.

I came to post the same thing. When Francis was confirming that Mangi is interested in a long-term deal, the agent agreed - and then was quick to catch himself and say "well, long-er term".
Makes me think they are asking for anywhere in the 3-5 year range.

To be fair, he said that if he got 35 to 40 goals next season, his value could be in the $7-8 million range, but also said that you run the risk of still running into a lot of teams that can't pay that very easily. I think he knows that the market may not be able to accommodate that value... or it may. He seems to admit that even with another 35 goal season, a $7-8 million AAV isn't guaranteed.
That leads me to believe that a long term AAV hedges below a $7 AAV on their side. Probably not much below. It wouldn't be a bad place to start negotiating anyway.

So deadline is this Friday, July 22 for Tkachuk to sign the 1-year 9M QO. If he does not sign, he can work on a different contract with the Flames or sign an offer sheet from anyone. Are there any other notable things that get triggered if Tkachuk doesn't sign his QO?

If it's a shorter term deal, does that AAV come in lower or higher than a 6-7 year deal?

Anyone think our pint sized Johnny replacement in Phillips gets a sniff at the NHL level? He's scored everywhere he's played. I still don't think small is the path to success but should be worth a try, no?

Phillips is the arbitration case I'm most interested in seeing play out. I was curious what he was going to present to try and force something on the Flames. I'm curious what his end game is here???

Can he force a 1-way deal so he gets paid an NHL salary even if he is sent down? Maybe force the Flames to walk away from a deal to make himself a free agent?
