Phil Kessel could probably be had for ~1.5 mil.
Still would like to take a flier on Milano....
Instead Brad threw money at guys like Rooney. What's he going to do here.
Also plenty of opportunity for through the trade route. You have an extra 1st and Valimki that can be swapped for scoring help and make us no weaker.
Rodriguez is another idea. All better ideas than standing pat with an unbalanced roster. Unless we're secretly going to rebuild route.

I am fine with that, but Lucic is no longer a NHL player. If there is a god he will retire, or waive his NMC so he can stay in Calgary and collect his salary in the minors and let the Flames have some replacement player and a small amount of cap relief.

Yeah, Monahan, while injured, was often paired with guys who just didn’t mesh and had bad possession metrics (compared to his time with other guys).

Monahan is tough to slot. If he bounces back a bit, then he should have better players such as Toffoli/Dube/Pelletier as wingers. If he is still broken, it would be hard for him to play on the 4th line with Lucic and Lewis. They would probably be better off with Lewis between Lucic and Duerr or one of the new guys (Rooney)

Or keep Monahan on LTI until cap space magically appears (he is currently on LTI, and the precedent has clearly been set by Las Vegas and Tampa Bay). Just have to use up his cap space before he is fit to return.

That would be the worst scenario. Huge risk of losing them for nothing just like Johnny. The only way fans wouldn't revolt is with a cup win then.
No way this happens. That would mean we traded Tkachuk for a 1st in 2025 and a prospect.
These two have to be signed or dealt for good futures. We're either still in the window of competing or it's re-build time.

Players can only be placed on LTIR with their consent. I doubt Monahan consents to that, it basically guarantees that this is his last contract.

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
^ They would also have to prove to the NHL that he is incapable of playing (ie: fails a physical). Thats unlikely in this scenario given he's rehabbing his surgery and is said to be doing well.

If only Brad placed as much importance on scoring as he does on having low skill ogres and half a dozen replacement level warm bodies. Throwing money at that #### adds up. It's better spent on positions that bring some impact.
If you're ever short on bodies, use the goddamn farm. I feel like I vent this every summer. But we actually have great players down there that can logistically slot in very easily now so why spend your dough on journeymen.

But if there is no traction on negotiations he could definitely be moved again. Maybe somewhere better, maybe somewhere worse, but highly unlikely anywhere that is more desperate than CGY to give him a big contract without seeing him play in their sweater.

We need a top 6 RW, preferably one with speed.
Pelletier is good but not good enough for second line duty. He should slot on nicely on the third line.
Maybe we could package Dube and Valamaki and a pick for Konecny.
Huberdeau-Lindholm-Konecny
Mangiapane-Backlund-Coleman
Pelletier-Ruzicka-Toffoli
Lucic-Rooney-Lewis
Hanifin-Anderson
Kylington-Tanev
Zadarov-Weeger
Markstrom
Vladar.

Oh I agree. I think it's really a waste that the guts on the farm rarely even get a cup of coffee. Maybe now that the ahl team will be in Calgary we will see a difference.

As much as his skating is lumbering, the guy was very consistent in the playoffs. Even dare I say, one of the better players through effort and smarts. This team is neither here nor there, despite the no rebuild messaging squeaking through between the lines. While I’m all for getting rid of him through buyout or trade, I do wonder what the purpose is at this point? Dealing means you give up valuable assets in picks. Buyout is ownership dollars where he’s not a main problem. I say for this year just suck it up and keep him. Going forward in todays NHL every single player has to have the ability to skate. Having him on the roster prevents that identity slightly, as he’s the slowest, but others like Toffoli are in the same boat. In a year where I don’t have much confidence anyway, I don’t mind having him around as he’s smarter than most guys and plays hard.

Agreed.
To have another 100+ point player leave (using Huberdeau and Gaudreau's last season) for nothing would be a disaster unless they won a Cup...which is a pretty tough ask with this lineup as it is currently IMO.
if JH isn't signing, its imperative to get assets for him before the trade deadline
Especially for an organization that doesn't believe in rebuilds.

If Monahan is fully ready to go, he will be far better served by doing the full training camp.

I think to start the year, Toffoli will get a look on the top line, leaving a potential Pelletier-Ruzicka-Dube third line. Not ideal, but they could be sheltered.

Maybe.
For me Rooney would be a first week of October signing if the farm kids didn't put up a good camp. Not something you do in the first few days of FA when you have bigger issues to address.
Their fixation with replacement level fodder just mystifies me.

Phil going to any team for $1.5M? I doubt it personally. I’d be surprised if he goes for anything under $5.5M to anyone.
