Ya the only issue I have with the trade, I will add that I do like the return, and think that Huberdeau is a great player, is simply the age of the players coming back, which goes to the whole "Win Now" texture of the deal. Which works within Treliving's mission. I still would love to see a bit of succession planning within the roster.

The Panthers and Flames Just Redefined the "Hockey Trade"
https://www.msn.com/en-ca/sports/nhl...f9958a6bafe50f
Quote:
The Florida Panthers and Calgary Flames pulled off the biggest deal of the salary cap era, and re-defined what a "hockey trade" is in the process.
|
Quote:
With his back against the wall and his organization in disarray, Flames GM Brad Treliving somehow managed to pull off a miracle as the clock ticked closer to midnight, turning an MVP candidate that had publicly stated his desire to leave Calgary as soon as humanly possible into another MVP candidate, a legitimate top-pair defender, a decent prospect, and a first-round pick.
Pour one out for Leverage, folks. It will be missed.
It's not hyperbole to label the trade that sent Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Jonathan Huberdeau, Mackenzie Weegar, Cole Schwindt, and a 2025 first as the biggest deal of the salary cap era.
|
Quote:
These trades simply don't happen in the all-too-conservative NHL. Not in a flat-cap era, at least. It was barely 24 hours ago, in fact, that Bally Sports' Andy Strickland mused on Twitter about how an NHL GM relayed to him just how impossible it was to move salary at this point in the offseason.
And then: BAM!
A blockbuster for the ages.

I think there's a possibility that playing in a Canadian hockey market may appeal to Huberdeau and Weegar. Its very different from where they played previously, maybe they'll find it exciting to have the attention and hype of a Canadian team.

Have to hand it to treliving. He turned lemon into lemonade. Very bad position to be in with Tkachuk and was able to flip him for a good return.
As mentioned. Tkachuk is a phenomenal all around player - he’s better than huberdeau, he’s better than Weeger. But to get both and a 1st? Smart play

Flames took the best offer available for a player they had to trade...critical thinking says they made the correct decision.
Even if you are "team rebuild" they have more to trade today than yesterday. There is a reason most people agree.

Are you his cousin? you are definitely putting all your eggs into this basket! lol
I hope you are more correct about Weegar than you were with Zadarov.

Since when? I mean this would be a pretty hot debate
Huberdeau was penciled into the top line of team Canada for the world cup
age is really the only argument...Huberdeau has better numbers and has been over 80 points multiple times

Hopefully everyone is right about Weegar. Tre sure thinks he is a #1D

I'd still gamble on Tkachuk long term but great trade still

Yep, still a lot to sort out. If Huberdeau signs an extension, then great. If not, this trade may end up being terrible.
Scenario 1: Huberdeau extends and the Flames have a star to build around. That would be wonderful.
Scenario 2: Huberdeau doesn’t want to extend and gets flipped quickly. The results could end up being great. No one knows.
Scenario 3: Flames flop and flip Huberdeau at the deadline. Again, a lot of uncertainty how that turns out. We are likely getting back a couple of late 1sts in the case.
Scenario 4: Flames win the Cup and Huberdeau leaves. It would be worth it.
Scenario 5: Flames are in a playoff position with Huberdeau unsigned and flop out in the pkayoffs, then lose him for nothing.
Just so much uncertainty with this and given recent history, it is hard to avoid thinking it won’t be scenario 5.

He strikes me a little like TJ Brodie…in that he is an excellent player, but makes a few memorable gaffes. Of course there are differences. But upgrading our D is a huge boon to this team, especially after the 2nd round last year. I’ve got to imagine this trade makes Sutter happy

Ya I wonder if Tkachuk puts up another 100 point season again. He had never even flirted with numbers like that prior to last season. Could shine on a Florida team that scored a lot of goals. It will be interesting to follow his story there.

Tkachuk will never get 115 points IMO
age I will give you but with his skating...Huberdeau skates better than him now despite the age difference

Worst case is flames deal both guys at deadline who will fetch each a 1st and a prospect.
Now flames have ability to get 3 1st rounds all in same draft (one being their own) plus a ton of cap space for following year plus.

I think he will do better in Florida than the other rumored teams but 100 points seems unlikely...to me anyway
