Really? I was in the exact opposite camp. I felt like we as a fanbase could put up with his odd decision making and pizzas up the middle in order to be rewarded with his playoff exploits.
Big heavy defensemen are a commodity in the playoffs and I had a feeling Z would play well. It’s probably the same reason why teams were lining up to give a 1st for Ben Chariot. You want the tough, greasy defensemen who can block shots, box out and dish/absorb hits in the playoffs.
Yep, but let's not forget his foot speed and ability to carry the puck in transition. That's his real selling point IMO
Sutter has always had a reputation to be a hard ass. However I wonder if that is misunderstood. Grumpy when the team is losing? Which true competitive person wouldn't be? However, if you listen to what he has to say you really do get the sense that he isn't the hard nosed taskmaster that he was previously made out to be. Maybe he was but he is smart and strives for success and improvement, not just in his team and his players but himself too.
I don't think he's the same Sutter that was here in 2004 or even with LA. I think a lot of the grumpiness and snippiness is gone. I think he explains his thinking to the players and I think he has really, really good strategies that he makes into very concrete actions for the players. And I think for a player like Gaudreau, who is extremely smart, he understands that what Sutter proposes are effective actions.

Just rewatched the game and highlites and WOW that was really an amazing game and an incredible goal.
I don't know too many players that get that opportunity and BURY it like Johnny.
I mean BOOM ....its OVER!!!!
Good on ya fellas....many gutchecks completed last night and a big big step mentally for our locker room. Going through absolute HELL trying to beat ol Jakey ( what a goalie huh) and then doing it after over 100 attempts in one game.
Dallas just gave the flames a very valuable lesson.
Dallas has been to the SCF and WCF in the last three years. They know what it takes to get there and compete, and brought every bit of that experience to this series. They ground things as much as possible and had their goalie stand on his head.
The Flames pushed through and should be well prepared for the Oilers.
Well said. This was actually good for the Flames -- tight-checking, god-mode goalie and PP wasn't great.
This will hopefully impress upon them what is needed to win in the playoffs and there are no easy games (even against the upcoming Oilers).
I don't think you know what this means. An epic elimination goal in overtime of Game Seven can not be "anti-climactic."
Yes, but only because you put the word "epic" in there, which is your subjective opinion.

A literal climax can be anti-climactic by being less exciting or awesome than hoped for. In fact, mostly people would not use the term 'anti-climactic' to describe anything other than the resolution to a situation.
"The start of that movie was so anticlimactic"! "The middle of the book was too anticlimactic for my tastes." When have you ever heard anything like that?
It seemed to me that the flames rolling 4 lines all game long including overtime eventually payed off, as the Dallas skaters all looked dead tired on their final shift. I wasn't paying close enough attention to the Dallas player numbers to tell if they were rolling their 4th line as well, but the Lucic/Lewis/Ritchie line got like 3-4 shifts in overtime.
So I spent the weekend talking to my son about the playoffs.
He's 5 and this is really the first year he's understanding and getting into following a sports team as opposed to watching the puck or ball on the screen. His team is the Calgary Flames. He doesn't understand the difference between leagues, the other day he came home saying that a classmate told him the Eagles are the best team, and he was saying no the Flames. For the record the Eagles are the local QMJHL team.
I recently found my 2004 Playoff CD, so we were listening to it in the car. The first track is the Chris Cuthbert Gelinas OT goal against Vancouver. So I was explaining to him how it was my favourite sports moment ever. Then why it was.
I also talked to him about how the playoffs work (Four Rounds, like Four Levels in a video game). Then that the Flames lost in the final level. He kept going on about how the Flames just kept getting better, and now are the best team in all the land.
I tried to prepare him for a Game 7 loss, because... well...
He just kept correcting me that the Flames were the best team in all the land.
Period.
It dawned on me that this kid has no idea what sports heartbreak is, or that it even exists. It's unfathomable.
Yesterday, due to sheer laziness I wore one of my Flames ball caps all day rather than comb my hair (yay weekends).
When the little guy was putting his pjs on, he took the hat off my head and wore it on his own head. Refused to take it off. Fell asleep with it on.
Spoiler!
After putting him to bed I went to grab a beer to watch the Pens/Rangers game before our own Game 7.
Went to the cupboard and reached for a glass.
Generally I use a shaker style pint glass. A stylized version of this one:
Spoiler!
But the Flames each game this series I used that one. Game 6 I made sure to use my Willi Becher glass (also from the Breton Brewing Company) as the Flames won each game I use that. However, that didn't work Friday night.
So I debated which to use, and opted for a hand made ceramic mug that the Breton Brewing Company gave to its Mug Club members this year. I'm not usually a fan of it, but figured "if this is the last game, what the hell".
Watched the Pens/Rangers until start time. Watched the first, then popped a melatonin and went to bed.
Alas, the 11pm start times, with a young child, and work doesn't allow for me to stay up late anymore.
At about 12:30 went to the bathroom, crawled back in bed and as I reached for my phone my wife says "did you check the score?" I replied "about to now." She said "it's tied 2-2". I thought great. To my shock, was out cold again.
Not sure when I woke up again, again to the bathroom (beer and Gatorade before bed isn't a great combination) when I got back my wife asked the same thing. Then informed me that the Flames won 3-2. I checked my phone to confirm.
Woke up extra early to put the highlights on to watch with my son.
When he saw the Red Lot erupt he jumped up and waved his hands in the air.
If we make the finals, and if I convince my wife to let me use points to go, and ifwe have enough points to go, and ifI get the time off work, and if relatives are in town, and if we can stay with them, and if... and if... and if... I think I'd be happy with the Red Lot even if we don't get tickets.
Man I still can't believe that OT winner went in, I can't believe Gaudreau shot it from that angle, I can't believe Ottinger was beat on a clean shot, I just can't believe after the series they had that they were able to pull it out.
Flames were the better team, but a hot goalie can take you to the finals and even win it.
I stopped and started this post a few times. So hopefully it's coherent.
TL;DR can't wait for the ATL
Fantastic post! And such a cute shot of your boy in your hat! We got another life-long Flames fan!

Too funny. Cuz my wife asked me if I wanted to go for ice cream during the first period. I was so down about the game and it was our first nice Sunday night of the spring so I figured what the hell. Got home just in time to see them tie it at 2.
I also infested ice cream during the game. Copious amounts by avg standards. This should become a thing for big games.
Macman is the most superstitious of all. Last time the Flames went to the Cup Macman also complained about people with superstition so now he has to do it every time. He'll also deny that he is superstitious but that's also part of how his superstition works.
I think I am irrationally superstitious, but I am also keenly aware that these are meaningless, with no bearing at all on the outcome of NHL games. I find myself constantly under self-reminder that I am being an idiot, and it is just a game.

Finished wading through this epic thread which had a few twists and turns. One way to summarize....
- Flames won in brilliant fashion
- See of Red and Red Mile are an extension of each other
- we all had something in our eyes
- #### burns at 451 Fahrenheit AND/OR at 4:51 on the time clock
- overflowing with even more appreciation for Monahan as a teammate and a bro-hugger
- WOS has another winner (could have been me if i was around to post)
- someone needs to check in on Dissentower's offspring
- it takes a lot to impress Sutter and we haven't seen it yet
- Oettinger is the next USA olympic goalie we will have to overcome for years

Brady is also very much employed by an NHL team. Seems to have zero issues cheering for Matty and the Flames. Even got in on the Red Lot party.
It wouldn't surprise me if the Blues actually have a front office policy by which Walt is bound. It also seems likely that Ottawa has different rules for Brady.
