A core piece likely has to go. Who do you think it should be, if not Mangiapane?

Who says a driver can’t be a finisher too? I think Ovechkin and Matthews are drivers as well and they’re 2 of the best goal scorers in the game today.
Well, this is where I think Brad Treliving put himself in a tough spot here. I think he really wanted to maximize his window and actually, he pretty much admitted to this on the Fan 960 a few weeks ago. So now he will have to make some tough decisions here or as he put it, “move heaven and earth” to re-sign these guys.
Obviously Monahan’s contract has to go. Ideally Lucic, but you can’t move that thing. I don’t think a buyout yields much in terms of cap relief, so the Flames may be stuck with it. Therefore, I could very well see a Dube or even a Hanifin move being made to get things done.

He doesn't have to walk away from the money if the team pays him to stay on in a 1.5 or 2 mil a season roll as a non player

He has a $3M bonus which would count as salary. He can’t accept that and simply walk away.

I rate the chances of Calgary participating in cap circumvention at zero.

Why not?
You cash the cheque on July 1st. Then you decide that the body and mind aren't up for another season. Done. You don't have to give the money back.

I doubt the Flames or Lucic would do that unless he was legitimately injured.

Even if he could do that, which I doubt, that $3M would still count against the cap.it doesn’t disappear. The bonus counts as part of his salary and cap for that season.

No it wouldn't. If he retires, his salary, and his cap hit, disappear.

Lucic is a competitor. He’ll accept a lesser role, but he’ll want to play.
He’s a fiery guy with limited use on the ice these days. But someone will want him. He’s a shining example of GAF for an inexperienced team out there. I’ll be sad to see him go.

Only if he refunds the signing bonus, as I understand the matter.

I do think people are going overboard on what players are going to get paid this of season. Gaudreau, yes someone will break the bank on. But it's a flat cap, no one is going to fly in with a mega rfa deal for mangiapane.

Zero chance he gets paid $3M for the season and it doesn’t count against the cap. Only unpaid amounts disappear.

Johnny would no looking for a max term deal but I wonder if Chucky would consider looking at another 3 year deal which would lower the cap and still give him flexibility if the cap is going to rise significantly in 3 years

Mangiapane is a better player. But he doesn’t have a better record thus far in his career.
His bargaining power is not that strong. He has one great year and only two middling years to back himself up
Will he have more individual success by the end of it? Probably. But Toffoli has been a reliable scorer for some years, including a 30 goal season — and he has won two Stanley cups. That matters.
If I’m Treliving, he’s my comparable — and I’m asking the Mangiapane camp why they think he should even make as much as TT.
