Can the Flames buyout Monahan for next year, then sign him for a deep discount next year, say 4 years for 1.5M? Flames get cap space next year, and also at $1.5M for what he provides is a fair deal with a low cap hit and the potential of getting better/improving from his injury. He stays on the team with his pal Johnny.

I still think 8 x $76M can probably get it done for Johnny.
For another team to beat that they need to go 7 x $76M which is a $10.8M cap hit which is tough for any team to do.
Tkachuk is the tougher one because I wonder if he wants to commit to 8 years. I could see him taking like a 3 year deal, which would expire once more of the COVID impacts are gone and would still leave him as a 27 year old UFA with a rising cap potentially.
8 x $9.5M for Johnny
3 x $9.5M for Tkachuk

Pro-rated he's on pace for 100 points, 57 goals. Injuries have been an issue for him but there's about 31 other teams that would offer him more.

Not starting anything. Tkachuk is not the straw that stirs the drink. Yes, he's a really good player, but he is not the guy who carries the mail. He is not worth $9+ million a year, which someone will be dumb enough to give him. That will be a mistake of a contract. I'd rather trade that contract out, recoup some solid pieces, then bring in a complimentary UFA player at a lesser contract number to take his place. When you look at additions and subtractions, and then the additions of the picks for moving out Backlund, the Flames are stronger for years to come. Depth wins championships. I think the Flames are way better off with Forsberg flanking Gaudreau and Lindholm than with Tkachuk, especially when you add in the likes of Thomas and Perunovich to the mix elsewhere in the lineup. Tkachuk is great and all, but the other components make the loss really easy to take IMO.

Gaudreau is going to have to be realistic about his age and performance as the deal winds down. That should help drive the cap hit down as he gets paid big dollars up front, but sees his actual contract dollars dip towards the tail end.

Well, you're not getting Forsberg at $7.5m, so I think that's a moot point.
I'd rather go with the devil you know. Give Tkachuk $9.5 to 10. That line is phenomenal and Tkachuk has a history of stirring the drink on other lines in Calgary. Plus, he's four years younger than Forsberg.

If the Flames manage to keep Jarnkrok under contract, Forsberg may just take that offer to play in Calgary with the rest of the Swedish mafia. Forsberg and Jarnkrok are really close and Forsberg wasn't happy when his pal was sent packing.

No clue why anyone is thinking we should be trading Tkachuk.
Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk is the best line in all of hockey. You do what you have to in order to keep that together, and that line is significantly better with Tkachuk than without.
The core of this team is:
Gaudreau
Tkachuk
Lindholm
Hanifin
Andersson
Markstrom
You pay to have that locked in. That's your #1 LW, #1RW, #1C, #1D, #2D, #1G.
Everything after you fill those slots is MUCH easier to fill than trying to replace one of those roles.

If that was true he's already be under lock and key.
Unless Monny starts playing some real hockey, he's gone at then end of next year anyway.

Well, for one thing, there’s a chance he’s unsignable after next season.

McDavid took the richest contract in the history of hockey. The Edmonton media spun it as a discount, but they were never able to point to anything that it represented a discount from.
It really is a very different situation from Crosby in Pittsburgh, which is why the comparison is valid.

If Lucic is to retire before next season starts, will it trigger any cap recapture penalty like Luongo did?

No.
The Cap Recapture penalty only applies to long-term back-diving contracts that were signed prior to the 2013 CBA.
Most of the impacted contracts have now expired. The only ones that are still active are Weber, Keith, Crosby, and Quick. Quick and Keith each have one year remaining. Crosby's ends in 2025 and Weber's in 2026.

That's my concern as well. I would be shocked if he signed anything but his qualifying offer. He accepts and signs that, and he's a UFA after next season. That could make him the most in demand rental come next trade deadline, but I don't think that's a situation Treliving wants to find the team in. Unless he signs a reasonable multi-year deal, I don't see him in a Flames jersey next training camp.

I bet he signs long term....but if not, then yes he will be dealt over the summer.

Based on the actual % of the cap at the time, McDavid’s contract was essentially only $1M more than Crosby’s.

Based on McDavid's total incapacity or unwillingness to play without the puck, that represents a significant overpay.
When McDavid signed his deal, he was the best point-scorer in the game. When Crosby signed his, he was the best player, period.

$7M is too much for Mangiapane, IMO. Something in the $5s is fair, and low $6s is stomachable, but $7s? I don't think you can go that high. At least not until we see the cap rising again.

Hard to imagine he walks away from $5M.
