I'm projecting but I really believe Johnny was trying so hard to get the 10th goal because Smith was in the net. Watching the highlights, it's possible that Tkachuk also chirped Smith on Lindholm's second goal.
Again, I'm projecting but it looks like the team has some animosity against Smith and I'm comfortable accepting that as the truth.

In the first period the Edmonton Oilers were pretty good overall and the Flames were swimming in their own end. But I think that has to do with their legs being heavy and the Oilers being fresh. But Lucic set a physical tone.
I mean the flames allowed two goals even strength, and three on the penalty kill. One on a 5-3 which is always a 50/50.
But 5v5 the Flames were dominant, it wasn't even close, it was embarressing for the Oilers. But it was to be expected, I mean its great that under Woodcroft, they were 9-1 or something like that against non playoff teams. But they're now I think 4-6 against playoff teams.
The other thing is that for the Oilers, Koskinen gets hot and carries them, then dramatically cools off. In the last 5 the Oilers are 2-3 with wins against SJ and NJ and losses, against Col, Dal and a blow out to the Flames.
My question to the Oiler's fans on this board is, and be honest. Do you really want to see the Oilers in the Playoffs? Do you want that first round matchup against a Col or Dal? Because honestly, its going to be ugly.
My other question is, Can you really be satisfied with McDavid and Draisiatl? I mean sure they get points, but beyond the whole they don't give a crap about backchecking, there's the whole, when the going gets tough, Draisiatl pouts and McDavid vanishes.
I mean yes, they are superstars, absolutely they put up points, but man, those two are deeply flawed, and in their mid 20's now with no sign of change.
The Flames were awesome last night on the penalty kill. But they were very good 5v5 without the puck and got stronger as the game went on, and were awesome offensively. They can fix the penalty kill, they can be more disciplined, but the Flames don't have a consistant basically character flaw.
Oh and the other question for Oiler fans, you know the ones that hype over and over that McDavid should win the heart or Draisiatl.
Hows it feel to know that at best Draisaitl and McDavid are at best the 3rd and 4th best players in the province of Alberta?

Any word on whether McDavid is OK after that vicious elbow? I was pretty concerned with how hard he went down, have to believe the paramedics were real close to rushing out on the ice there. You know it's a scary hit when the body flies through the air like that. McDavid is one tough dude who will always fight through any contact so you know that was one violent collision.
Luckily the league enforces the concussion protocol to really protect the player in violent cases like this.
You're going to have to wait for the release of the new McDavid documentary this summer.
Canna McDavid I believe I can fly. I've already picked out the theme song.

I remember that JG was healthy scratched a couple of games early one season early in his career - I don't remember who the coach was that did it.
Has McD or Drai ever been a healthy scratch? Is there a coach out there with the cajones to do it?
Just keep sending those 2 over the boards hoping for a different result. Einstein must have been visioning the Oil when he came up with the definition of insanity.

At this point in their career, you wouldn't do that with them nor would you do that with Gaudreau.
But it shouldn't take a healthy scratch to get them to round out their games either. Look at how Gaudreau has responded to the challenge this year.
Calling for the Oilers to start taking shots at the end of a blowout. Do they know who they're playing? I mean really?
Ya, they are delusional, my family member who is an oilers fan said that Backlund is going to get wrecked after the “headshot” on McDavid when he got that interference call. I was like by who? No way anyone on the oilers step up with Gudbranson and Lucic on patrol. And this is why their team might miss the playoffs and definitely out in the first round if they do. No fight back.

The funny thing about that quote is that it’s not just the D and the G
Forwards actually matter on the defensive side of the game in the NHL
As long as they are daft enough to not understand that their ‘generational talents’ (their words, not reality) are part of the problem, the hilarity shall ensue
McAvi, Leon, Kane, Nurse: -4
But hey. Ceci was -5 . Probably his fault, right?
Absolutely. The reason it looks like a fire-drill in the Edmonton defensive zone all the time is because they're constantly out-numbered.
For Kostinem...his glove..well, lets be honest, it may as well not even be there.
But he let in some stinkers blocker side too.
So now you've got a goalie with...no glove, no blocker, his stick has never been good...the real problem is they're running out of equipment to give him.

Exp:
I don't see many posts talking about it but what a game by Mikael Backlund.
Completely shuts down both the Draisaitl and the McDavid lines head to head, giving them NOTHING. Zero points. Almost kills Connor McDavid by simply brushing against him. I'm surprised McDavid could get up off the ice by himself after that vicious hit.

Backlund was out against both Draisaitl and McDavid for roughly six minutes apiece, didn’t give up a goal, scored twice against Draisaitl and once against McDavid and posted xGF% splits of 84% and 80% respectively.
That’s an elite shut down line folks.
That's what you want from your shutdown center. Limit their chances, try to suppress the damage they can do. To do it against the "top" two offensive players in the league is somewhat elite.
That in itself is exactly what this team pays him for. So important.
But wait.
Scores two, assists on another, takes eight shots on goal, has 3 takeaways, finishes a +3 with the most ice among Flames forwards.
What a game.

I don't post here very often but damn that was a satisfying win to watch. It's right up there with the attached. Nice to have our Flames being the talk of the town again.

Sportsnet is already preparing a 5-episode special on his miraculous recovery from the vicious beating his head took hitting the ice when he took that dive. Watch for it on a station near you...starring Ron Maclean and Louis DeBrusk as commentators.
