How does a misspelled hashtag actually gain traction? #blackfacedHILTLER? Or people going off about Marshall Law. Its seriously draining to see stuff like on twitter.

Agree that some of these people are likely not true Naz!s. But they are undeniably among real neo-Naz!s. It's exactly these type of people that are susceptible to radicalized ideas, if they have the cognitive dissonance of equating Canada to Naz! Germany and willing to deface our flag with symbols that goes against the very values of this country.
Invoking racist symbolism to prove your point, while marching with people who truly hold those views - when do lines start blurring? I think most of us are saying that we don't want to find out and it's not ok. Thus asking for rational people to please denounce and condemn support for ideology that has no place in this country.

Another issue is that many of the protestors are highly susceptible to whatever they are being told from the group. You listen to the media interviews during the occupation, and many of them are completely unhinged from reality. At that point, they'll believe whatever they are told, no matter how despicable. Because the leadership holds these views, it's easier for them to spread them amoung people who may not have bought into them in normal situations. I'm not saying all protestors(which I guess I need to say now...).

Wanted to give you a shout out for the fantastic writing over the last few days. Excellent posting that deserves recognition for the balanced, thoughtful, and cogent points made.
Posts like yours make this board a better place, and have been something we have been missing, not just on CP, but generally in society throughout the last few years.
Great stuff.

To the best of my knowledge no, he is not.
His kid Dillion Hillier wrote a book about fighting with the Kurds against ISIS. His brother runs a podcast and is/was? a teacher. I gave him some feedback on a podcast he did about my UN tour.

He seems to have turned wacky.
Dillon is here holding the diagolon flag that the group with the guns in Coutts were associated with.

On the flip side, I've also heard firsthand a lot of positive stories about how the crowd treated people.
For example, I've spoken to co-workers that lived downtown. Somalian and Eritrean.
They were directly affected by lack of sleep. They walked about downtown with their masks on.
I asked them did they ever get hassled for it and they both said no. In fact the Eritrean said that they the crowd was very polite and respectful to her and seemed like nice people.
She went on to say that walking around downtown and watching the going ons gave her mixed emotions. Angry and sad.
Angry at not being able to sleep and the disturbance but sad for the crowd. She described them as simple people. Like the people that come from the villages in her country. Nice people but simple, easily led and uneducated.
So yeah, there were bad apples no doubt, but there also appears to be, based on the accounts I've heard many gullible nice people.

Are they white? I've heard it was those of minorities most prone to being harassed on the street, for obvious and sad reasons.
Probably only those "simple"/easily influenced people would make a trip that far for that long under a leadership they didn't have a strong familiarity with.
Again the biggest issue here is the fact that in this climate I could have sinister intentions, but all I need to say is "freedoms!" and "no more mandates" and I would gain a following without people knowing anything about me or what I plan to do about it.
We have an issue in this day with confusing charisma with integrity.
Pat King as much as he is many unsavory things has charisma going for him in front of a screen. His demeanor makes him easy to sympathize with. The problem is people feeling like there is a connection between them and him because of how he speaks.
A few times in my life I've known narcissistic people who are pathological liars rather intimately. They never come across as bad people in public. I've seen one literally shake hands with the elderly and kiss babies, and then alone in a room will make racist and unsavory remarks. And people would fall for it because they had the public mask act down so well.
You. Have. To. Vet people before you believe them, entrust your earned money to them, and put yourself in the crosshairs of the law for them.
At the end of the day when you're in trouble and they're nowhere to be found, you just feel stupid and regretful. Don't be a simp who can be led by the nose at a moments notice.
In the day and age of click bait and sensationalism its never been so important to lead with intellect, and be able to distinguish facts from misinformation.
Claiming that a multiple million people were heading to Ottawa should've been the first clue. If they're going to start with lies, what's going to stop them from lying about the rest.
This should be modern life 101, but for some reason it isn't.

It doesn't help when these people are getting played at every level.
You have mainstream media telling people not to trust mainstream media (and, in turn, seeming trustworthy, "only WE are telling you the truth")
You have elected officials telling people not to trust the government (and, in turn, seeming trustworthy, "WE aren't real politicians, we're just like YOU")
Then you have a menagerie of underhanded people looking to capitalize on the easily duped for anything as simple as an ego boost to financial reasons and turning these people into actors to further their hate-driven goals for societal change.
Basically, much of the world conspires against these "simple" people, and very astutely, it is the ones specifically conspiring against them telling them this. The ones who want to use them will tell them they are being used.
I don't think it can be repeated enough that the organizer of this convoy/protest/occupation (whatever you want to call it) are far right. Among them (the organizers) are white nationalists, people who have spread hatred of muslims, LGBTQ people, and basically any minority you can imagine, people who have advocated for the violent overthrow of the government. These are the organizers, as in, the reason this exists in the first place and the reason it became what it was.
We can argue all day about how it's right or wrong to lump people mean or be mean on the internet (how quaint and meaningful a discussion!) but anyone who doesn't recognize what this movement is and who is driving it is just as simple as the people following it. It is not a secret at this point.
People can jump into this thread defending their friends who are "good people!" that donated to this all day. But if you're not explaining to your friends what they donated to and why it's dangerous, your words are pointless. "Oh no, people are saying mean things that could be attributed to my friends!" Congrats, who cares? Go talk your friends out of doing something stupid instead. After all, they're good people. They'll listen to you.
