I'm not the one calling Ruzicka the teams 3rd line center, that was the Flames coach, Darryl Sutter.
Watch Sutters presser about where Toffoli will play today, he explains it all.

Not sure what you're getting at here... he never mentions Monahan or Ruzicka. Nor does he say anything about who Toffoli will play with. All he said was that Toffoli has played 4 in 6 and he needs to manage his minutes

Haha Sutter has appeared sour while answering any questions related to the trade as his plan is and always has been, to downplay the hype train the media is on.

Well, exactly. Sutter says things with intent, and that intent is hardly ever to answer the question. I think he fully expects Toffoli to have an impact, and he will slot him where he thinks that will happen best.

Darryl Sutter always says his team sucks and the other team is awesome...that is how he gets them to play like underdogs and not take anything for granted
How many times has he said the Oilers/Knights are top two and they are fighting for that 3rd spot
meanwhile the Flames with the best points percentage, we know what happens when this team gets too high on themselves

Toffoli will start with former junior linemate in Monahan but we'll see how long that lasts.
Either way, there's another level of energy and excitement after the move.

Sutter probably didn't even want Toffoli. Probably pissed that Pitlick is gone.

Darryl is playing 3 dimensional chess at the very highest level with media, players, opposition ( checker players) .

I figure it's this as well.
Oilers do the opposite and overindulge in the premature praise, and you know how that turns out. Every. Single. Year.

If this could energize Monahan and get that line going to then look out.

The scapegoating of Monahans linemates for his lack of production are over. Yes agreed, Dube hasn't been helping his situation but that's a double edged sword. Monahan hasn't helped Dube or Ritchie at all either. The idea that Monahan kept setting them up for glorious chances they couldn't bury is complete BS.
We all watch the games, we see what Sean Monahan has been about this season. He does get the benefit of doubt for going through hip surgery in the off season but watch him skate. IMO he's skating as well if not better than ever.
In his defense, his advanced stats have been strong of late (as has Dubes) even if they have been sheltered with offensive zone starts and a low quality of competition. He isn't hurting the team with his lack of production due to every other line knocking it out of the park. Adding Toffoli to his wing is freaking exciting.
We all want Sean Monahan to succeed, but to act as if he has zero responsibility for his horrid 5 on 5 production this season is a joke. Toffoli HAS to help right? No more excuses. Lets go Moneyhands!
So excited to watch the game tonight!
|
Very fair assessment. Monahan definitely has and should have a ton of responsibility for his own performance. We’re talking about an established 9 year vet who wears a letter and is the 3rd highest paid player on the team. Expectations on him should be high and he’s been easily the most disappointing skater this season. It’s actually unfathomable that he ranks 16th on the team in even strength production with Ruzicka hot on his tail now.
But maybe this is the turning point of Monahan’s season. He’s got his former roommate to line up with now and maybe this is exactly what he needs. Monahan’s not a play driver, he needs talented linemates around him to manufacture offense and Toffoli is the type of player who doesn’t need a lot of chances to score. I could see a few Monahan passes to Toffoli that end up in the back of the net. If this is the move that fixes the 3rd line, then LOOK OUT NHL.

Sutter doesn't want the players getting ahead of themselves. Line up look great on paper, but can't start thinking they're a team of destiny or something stupid.

Why doesn't Sutter think Lucic-Ruzicka-Lewis are a 3rd line? They are blowing away the production of the Monahan line and Sutter is giving them more shifts than the Monahan line.
Here is the even strength average ice time since Feb 1st. :
Lewis 12:12
Lucic 11:51
Rucizka: 11:38
Monahan 10:14
Dube 9:57
Ritchie 9:55

It was GioforPM giving me a dig about Monahan being the 4th line center because of Sutters comments on Saturday. So hes wondering why Toffoli would be on the 4th line. Again I didn't call Rucizka the 3rd line center, Darryl Sutter did.

I also think Darryl just has really high standards which is a good thing for this organization that has accepted mediocrity for 30+ years. Winning just a playoff round shouldn’t be the standard around here, it should be multiple rounds or a championship.
One championship? Nope, more, always more championships. If that’s the type of attitude he can instill in the players, then fantastic, because then they’ll never be content. I think this is the type of mentality that goes hand in hand with killer instinct as well which is the type of attitude Michael Jordan had. That guy three-peated twice, I certainly wouldn’t mind the Flames winning 6 championships in the next 7 years.

Sutter also says the Oilers are the best team in the west (with Vegas).

Every team of destiny had to earn it. All 40+ wins and then another 16.
If they start believing that, they'll stop doing the work to earn it.

I wouldn't read too much into how Toffoli is utilized tonight and tomorrow and how he will be used going forward. As Darryl said in the presser, Toffoli just finished a four games in six night stretch with a back-to-back ending on Sunday. The easy way to limit ice time would be to keep him off special teams; especially, with no time to practice them with the team.

Best way would be to win in a rout, so Sutter can run lines equally. I'd let him in on PP2 at least. Maybe not PK - that's hard work and a lot of shot blocking.
Speaking of which, another good PKer. That's good heading down the stretch. Backlund, Coleman, Toffoli, Lindholm, Lewis are all great at it, and in a pinch Mangiapane can go in.
