Sutter's UFA record was also deplorable. He did bring in a few great players, but also signed dozens of depth guys who were not of NHL quality. There was a constant revolving door in the bottom six. The current team has enough depth to keep Sutter from repeating those mistakes.
I think Sutter has actually matured a bit, and is taking a less hardline approach. I've noticed that when players make mistakes he doesn't staple them to the bench for inordinate amounts of time.

I think all of this is a fair read on things. Who can forget Sutter not only planting a young, promising Phillippe Sauve to the bench, but then also embarrassing him in the media?

I agree, and I would also add that Sutter took over a team that didn't even have its own farm team and if I recall had one of the smallest scouting staffs in the NHL at the time. I recall reading that he really pushed to get a farm team for player development. Again, memory is fuzzy but I think we were sharing w Carolina.
He seemed to do well as a GM when he was acquiring players he was personally familiar with from his previous coaching gigs. Less so when he didn't previous coach them.

Vegas injuries make it easier from a cap perspective but not a team perspective. Does Vegas trade picks/prospects and punt this season? Are injuries causing the delay on the Vegas side?

The Flames would be crazy not to beat that Vegas offer. There's lots of options for the flames without gutting the group. The Sabres ask must be still in an unrealistic territory for this deal not to be done already. I'm sure the movement of salary is an issue and that has some moving parts to make work, perhaps with another team or two, but I'm guessing there's one key piece that it's all hinging on.

When Sutter first took over as GM, he was his own best pro scout. He hadn't coached every player in the league, but he had coached against nearly all of them and knew their strengths and weaknesses. As time went on, his information became outdated, and the organization seemed reluctant to let him spend money on pro scouting.

I don't see how that solves their cap issues. They have space right now due to LTIR, but Pacioretty is supposed to be back late November, Tuch in Feb, Stone is apparently close, and Whitecloud is week to week. With those players back in the lineup, they would need to send down or waive around 4.5 million to be cap compliant. They would definitely not be able to fit Eichel's salary if he was cleared prior to the playoffs.

If you look at all of his moves, it's a baffling revolving door. Sutter moving out guys for no reason, and then often re-acquiring them, while losing resources in the moves:
http://www.nhltradetracker.com/user/...l_Sutter/165/1
He lets guys like Tanguay, Conroy, Jokinen, etc..Only to realize they are exactly what the Flames needed and re-acquire them.
You've got a team with a great defence/goalie and Conroy/Iginla up front. Surely it couldn't have been that difficult to acquire a second line and just not trade that line immediately away. Conroy didn't even want that much money when he left Calgary. He signed for 4 years and $3million/year and just wanted some long term certainty.
I know the lockout was a factor, but I still cannot for the life of me comprehend why you would go to game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals and then decide to make so many personnel changes the next season.

^ Anybody could see that the team over-achieved. Changes had to happen for sustained success. It nearly worked too, the Flames just lost in first rounds then Sutter panicked and starting making crap moves.

Monahan, Zary, unconditional first 2022 and Emilio Petterson is a better offer than the Vegas one, and substantially less than most people have been talking about in this thread.
To fit the cap in Calgary, Zadorov would have to be moved before Eichel came back.

The Vegas offer is actually a lot, depending on how you view Krebs. Tuch is a 25 year old 20+ goal and 50+ point scorer. He's probably somewhere between Dube and Mangiapane in value. Krebs has a ton of talent. He destroyed the AHL, but has been useless in the NHL. Maybe He's on par with Valimaki.
Maybe:
Dube + Valimaki + 1st + second?
Maybe Buffalo just prefers the Vegas players and/or sees Tuch as more on the level with Mangiapane and wants him out of Calgary.

I don't think that's a better offer. I think it's quite a bit worse actually.

I have a better opinion of Monahan than most people.

Yeah I don't believe that Vegas package from NRD.
No way Vegas doesn't want to send more cap back then that.
Also think if that was on the table then it would be done already. That is probably exactly what Buffalo would want.
Krebs = 1st
Tuch = Good young player
Brisson = 1st
1st
To me that is probably what Buffalo's ask is, not what Vegas's offer is. Although it would be kind of funny if Eichel hires Pat Brisson to be his agent, and then his son ends up getting traded as part of the package for Eichel.

Agreed, I would think Vegas would have to move a contract
