No interest in Parise, but as a depth option would LOVE to have Suter... obviously money/term would have to be correct but if Stone is our current depth plan I like this a lot more.

Suter going to CHI would also be a delicious outcome. He can mentor Caleb Jones to be the next Seth Jones.

To Buffalo:
1st round pick
Marco Rossi
Matthew Boldi
Matt Dumba

To Minnesota:
Jack Eichel

That would be hilariously idiotic. After this season..

Kaprizov (8.5) - Eichel (10) - Zuccarrello (6M)
Fiala (6ish) - EK (5.25M) - Foligno (3.1M)
Hartman (1.7) - xxx - xxx
xxx - xxx - xxx
xxx

Brodin (6) - Spurgeon (7.575)
Soucy (2.75M) - xxx
xxx - xxx
xxx

Talbot (3.66M)
xxx
+
12.75M in dead cap (that goes up to 14.75M the following two seasons)

=

73.3 Million dollars.. out of a flat cap of 82.5M

That leaves them 9.2M dollars to fill out 11 roster spots.. while sporting laughably poor depth throughout the roster and having no quality prospects on ELC's to fill important holes as a result of the trade.

Skinner and Bobrosky are just bad contracts where it isn't as back loaded. If they play a couple more years the cap saving are at least there. Both are just bad contracts. Kudos to the agents on those.

I wonder if Uncle Gary had good stories about life in Calgary when young Ryan was star-eyed and impressionable?

He was 4 years-old when the Flames won the Cup, so that could have burned some positive thoughts into his brain.

I feel like Suter could get a multi year deal with a decent cap hit so he might be looking for best deal.

If he is signing for the minimum then I think he is heading to Tampa or Vegas

Agreed. No idea if that’s what they would give up (too much/too little) for eichel but what else could be the motivation for buying out these guys? There has to be a “win now” move to explain this because these buyouts handcuff them in the very near future.

Expansion draft. They were forced to protect both and on the blueline Suter blocks one of Dumba/Spurgeon/Brodin from being protected

But why buy out Parise as well? Why not just Suter? Is there a foward that they are worried about losing because of Parise’s protection slot. Also, I would think Parise would have waived his NMC… highly doubtful Seattle would have taken that contract.

This is GM’s well-deserved punishment for signing players to expensive long contracts with NMC/NTC. I wish there was a study report done on the historic percentage of those contracts actually being successful vs. busts.

I do believe they have forward protection issues as well. And why would he waive it when he can get bought out and go sign another contract? More money.

Except it's a different GM being punished than the guy who signed the deals.

Remember when the Wild signed Zach Parise and he was supposed to put them over the top, seems like a long time ago now.

13 years and $98M later, as per Cap friendly if I'm reading that correctly.

They did turn into a powerhouse team in the regular season for a year or two after those signings. That was it. That was their window with the Koivu, Parise, Suter and Dubnyk core. I imagine they thought they would be a better team for longer with those signings but it has aged terribly.

A little classless IMO. You would think the organization at the very least would have given him the heads up that they are considering it. The guy has been an absolute workhorse for that organization for nine seasons and they cut him loose just like that without even talking to him.

Agreed. Completely classless. Still a very serviceable, albeit maybe slightly overpaid top pairing/second pairing guy. A leader on your team, and community. A cornerstone of your franchise. Doesn’t send a great message to other UFAs who might consider Minnesota as well on top of that. Really puzzling decision.
Buyout decision aside, bare minimum decency to communicate this.
