An offer sheet doesn’t have to result in a change of team to be successful

Say
- Tre offers Mang 3 M.
- Mang goes to another team and gets an offer sheet at 4.5
- Tre matches

Then the offer sheet was successful, as a negotiating tool

Those are the offer sheets that were accepted. There are likely more that weren’t.

11 since Gratton in 97. Aho was the first to sign an offer sheet since 2013

My point is there's no reason to think Mangiapane is the type of player to attract an offersheet. They're extremely unlikely, and at $4.3M or less there's no way Calgary doesn't match

There is no way to force Mangiapane to sign a long term deal unless he wants to.

Agreed
But in a lot of these cases the teams hold the leverage.
Rfa rules largely favour the team
I think ultimately it will be a four year deal. Flames get two ufa years and he still hits ufa at a relatively young age

Some of these rfa deals have been gigantic. The way I see it, the club has leverage on dollars, he has leverage on term. The longer the term the club wants, the more leverage he has.

To give up two years of UFA for him will cost. But to your point, he could cash in huge at the end of that deal so not a deal breaker for him.

Also have to factor how much cap room the club has. I don’t how they upgrade the forward without adding salary.

And then of course what is Mangiapane worth. 28% of his production this year came in a 4 game exhibition series. I’m wary of paying for that.

Would 4*4 get it done?

11 accepted and either matched or the player went. There’s offer sheets that are offered and the payer doesn’t accept, for one reason or another. They don’t become public.

I know

I don't see Mangiapane as an offersheet target, especially not one to worry about

What this team needs is for some guys from Stockton to give them what Bennett and Ryan did last year. Give some of that money to Mangiapane and then add some salary through a forward trade to improve the club.

I just don’t know if that is realistic.

Nobody is going to offer sheet Mangiapane in a flat cap year. Nobody has the cap space, and nobody is going to be throwing out the cheap team-controlled players that draft picks potentially represent.

Watching the worlds and the guys brought up Connor garland and his RFA status.

They speculated he would be signing for 5M a year. It donned on me that he would be a pretty close comparable to AM. Both guys are 25 YO and late rd draft picks.

Last 2 years, 117 Games 34G 44A 79pts. 15:44 game 2:25 PP

Mangi 124 games 35G 29A 64Pts 15:02 game 1:06 PP

If the guys are correct then that puts 88 right there for 5M on a longer term deal as well.

5X5?

With all due respect, Mangi is an exciting young player with potential.
But a bunch of goals against inferior or exhibition games does not make him a proven top scorer.

He can bet on himself but there is room for negotiating risk vs rewards

5X5?
39 points in 49 games - 0.8%
32 points in 56 games 0.57%

That’s a bit difference.

Mangiapane was born in April 1996. Monahan, October 1994; Lindholm, December 1994.

Yup, my bad. Used hockeydb for the ages. Should have just gone to the roster on the Flames site. Mangi is still 25, so NOT young. He's in the prime years of his career.

And therefore he’s going to be thinking this is his biggest contract.

He can think all he wants, but he also has to have his expectations in alignment with what the market will bare. He can do more damage coming in high than being realistic in his ask. His agent will have to do some serious comparison work to find that sweet spot. I wish him luck, but I don't see him getting anything more than what Lindholm got. He should be tickled with getting 5x$4.5-4.75 IMO.
