Upcoming Mangiapane contract discussion
Obviously, Gaudreau and Tkachuk are the two guys who get talked about a lot in terms of what their next contracts will look like. Both those guys need new deals at the conclusion of the 2021–22 season.
Another player who will need an extension is Andrew Mangiapane, who has emerged as a terrific two-way NHL player for the Flames (and is doing a hell of a job at the Worlds right now). He's entering the final year of a two-year deal paying him at a bargain rate, $2.425 million.
Mangiapane will be 26 when his next contract kicks in. He'll be eligible to sign a new deal on July 28. What do you think it should look like?

Anyway you slice it, he won't have to settle for crumbs on his next contract. He'll be getting a lot of dough.
I toast his performance at the World Championships so far this year.

Kid's got arb rights and, as we all know, a ton of favorable 5 on 5 stats. I think he asks for 6, gets 5. Or thereabout.

Andrew Mangiapane has worked hard virtually every game he's played here for the Flames.
4 x $5 would be good but maybe they go for 6 x $6 since this could be his prime years and it's possible he could decline a bit before free agency.

Hate to be that guy but he could represent a sell high opportunity in a trade package. Not saying I want him traded but you have to give up good players to get good players and according to the GM changes need to be made.

One player I see as a recent comparable is Alex Iafallo, which was 4*4. I would like a little longer, so I'll go 5*4.5M or 6*5M.
Alex Iafallo
-Age 27
-Expiring Cap Hit: 2.425M
-Expiry Status: UFA
-20-21: 13G, 17A, 30P in 55G
-19-20: 17G, 26A, 43P in 70G
Andrew Mangiapane
-Age 25
-Expiring Cap Hit: 2.425M
-Expiry Status: RFA
-20-21: 18G, 14A, 32P in 56G
-19-20: 17G, 15A, 32P in 68G

6x$6M?!?!? What the hell crack are you guys smoking? Throwing that kind of money at players of Mangiapane's calibre is what gets teams into cap hell.
See how he does next year. $6M is on the table if and only if he becomes a 60-point player. Based on his play to date I wouldn't offer him a nickel over $3.5M/yr right now.

I don't even know where to begin figuring out this contract. This may be a messy one. He broke out last season that was an abbreviated one, and then took another big step in this even shorter season. I would categorize his 5on5 production as elite-level. Plus he has strong underlying metrics. One would assume his next contract would probably start with a 5, or even a 6 on a multi-year deal.
However, even prorating his production, he doesn't crack 30 goals and 60 points. Does that get him a 6x6? 6x7? I think 7 is definitely too high. 6 seems high considering his point production.
I think you can safely include him as part of this team's core, however. Just have no idea what his actual worth is. I also wonder how good he will become - will he take another step next season? I would bet on yes watching him play and develop on this team.

He’s around a 50 point player already, without a lot of power play tune and playing 16 minutes a game. 60 points with a bigger role isn’t that tough to imagine.

You don't pay Mangiapane $6M a year, not without a history of better performance. In a flat cap world you can't make negotiation mistakes and $6M for 6 years for a player that has a career high output of 32 points and has not broke the 20 goal level is a mistake. Every dollar matters.

And then we will be looking for a Mangiapane later.
His 5v5 production is extremely valuable.

If you want him locked up at a long term deal with very reasonable $’s, you have to do it this offseason. He’s only going to get better. If we wait another offseason he’s only going to want more imo.

Let's also take into consideration the context of that breakout year. Playing under COVID protocols and against the weakest division in the league. Would he be able to repeat those numbers against a full roster of teams? How much impact would the wear and tear of travel have his success? It is very likely that almost all players in the Canadian division sees a slight regression next season as all teams are brought back into the mix.
