I just don't understand the thinking behind this, and am aware you are not alone on it.
Is he having a bad year by his standards? Yes. without question.
Do you dump players every time they hit a bad stretch in their careers? No, that is a sure fire way to stay mired in a cycle that never sees a team get better.
Prior to this season MT was 47th in the entire league in points scored/53rd in the entire league in points per game from the time he broke into the league.
Add to that all the other things he does defensively (last night not withstanding), his ability to get other players/teams completely off their games, his ability to draw penalties and his willingness to accept the blame for team struggles all on himself, I have no idea what the hell people want from him.
We have 4 seasons (293 games)of exceptional hockey as a sample size prior to this.
We also have part of one season (37 games) of less than great hockey from him (yet still 2nd on the team in pts) this season. A season that has been so effed up between when it starts, the protocols, the inability to socialize etc.
Yet we have a great many people wanting to use the last part of that equation and ship him out.....for what??? You simply aren't going to get a player of his abilities in return, unlikely to get a player younger than him that has been established as an NHLer, but hey you might save a couple million on the cap
Really really bizarre how so many have turned on him so hard.
