Maybe the Flames and the Sabres can help eachother out. One team gets the pick of all players from both rosters, and in trade the other gets all of the draft picks for the next three years. Couldn't be worse than this.

True but their opponent tonight plays 2 games in 11 days

And I'll bet they will use those days off to get better. Inline the Flames, who after extended periods between games always get worse.

It looks like to me that the Flames have taken their foot off the pedal a bit in both their forechecking and in their transition game. Pucks are moving out slower with more hesitation creeping-up into their game again. They aren't being as aggressive on the forecheck as they were in the first few games under Darryl.

I think - FOR THE MOMENT - that this is still very much a work in progress. I didn't think it would turn around so quickly under Darryl. There is a lot of details to work out, and a lot of bad habits to eradicate. Another 5 or 10 games should start showing who this team really is. I hope they manage to continue winning at their current pace until then.

At the end of the day, I am at least satisfied that Calgary brought in a good coach, and if the Flames continue to flounder, then we can more accurately ascertain that the core needs a serious change. Let's see what the next few weeks' worth of games shows us about this team.

Pros and cons so far:
  • This team does not cough-up pucks even close to as often for grade-A opportunities the other way.
  • Team is finally actually sticking up for one another
That's about it from this cheerleader for now. This team is starting to look 'boring' again in the way they generate offence. They simply aren't transitioning fast enough, and they are not testing the goalies often enough. This team looked really good for a bit with the new coach bump in their metrics, but those are starting to revert to what we were seeing under Ward again. However, I do think they have done a much better job at not allowing turnovers to end up as odd-man rushes very often, and they have done a good job at contesting shots from dangerous areas - the goaltenders have had to be much less amazing acrobats than just solid positionally, which does bode well for when they fix themselves at the other end of the ice.

This is concerning - and right now definitely points at this team being poorly constructed - but instant change was not the realistic expectation. Hopefully they figure this mess out sooner rather than later, and also manage to continue winning enough games until they do have it figured out.

If it doesn't get figured-out, well... I at least feel a bit more assured in making major moves after a proper coach was brought in to see what he could do. Still hopeful things get turned around, but if they don't, at least I will not wonder if it was the coach or the players that were the issue.

Not sure if this has been asked, but what team leads the league in missed shots on net? I'm guessing Calgary would be up there.

I strongly suspect this is a comment found on the boards for every single team.

Thoughts on icing the exact same lineup (save for Rittich) tonight? With the talk about 3 games in 4 nights, I thought we might see some fresh legs. Maybe it was to reward them for the W on Friday. On the other hand, maybe it's an indication Sutter isn't satisifed with what the others (Simon, Kylington, etc) can offer?

It’s just how they do it

I didn’t see the Leafs jump on a turnover, wind up for a huge slap shot from the hash marks and miss entirely

I just don't think it's there as much as I like a lot of the current players.
They have to decide what they want to do as an organization and going forward especially with a new building in a couple years, need to have at least a good competitive team.

I'll keep cheering for the team in the meantime and hopefully we can take out some frustrations against Ottawa the next couple games.

Go Flames!

Agreed, I thought they looked tired...gassed. We are seeing a much better effort overall. This is a team that usually does 100 passes and played too fancy, but are now being asked to play a more physical challenging style.

As for the shots to the crest, probably more indicative of a tired team.

For what it’s worth, the girlfriend watched with me tonight and said “these guys look much better than they did last time I watched” which was pre Sutter.

So at least there’s that

Correction: there were a number of non-qualifiers in that top 60, so the Flames don't have a player in the top 45. Still a very concerning stat though. Lindy is in the top 50, but after that there's not another Flame in the top 75. Yikes.

Meh. Flames should be ecstatic with the split.

Average to below average roster, by a "in on everything" yet more or less incompetent gm who has barely improved, if at all, the core roster he inherited.

The entire city's hopes lie in sutter. Not on the average players or the dumbass gm. Says a lot

So not a terribly good night.
Well somebody is going to win and lose every game and I know the Flames aren't going to run the table so if that is your standard you will always be dissapointed.

The hope for this trip was splitting with the Leafs and then beating the Sens twice

Man, Robert was really furious today in the overtime call in show tonight. His issue was with Treliving and that the problems run too deep for Sutter to fix.

As Steinberg said, we can't criticize his passion for the team, but I was laughing throughout that call. It was great.

Salaries are a problem so Toronto would have to eat 50 % and Toronto would still have to add too.

I don't know where to find the missed shots on net numbers. I'm guessing that there must be a collected number for it somewhere.

Yeah this is the most inaccurate Flames team I have ever seen. Possibly the least dangerous too.

Never drive to the net. Shots from the outside. No top line forwards. Huge issues up front. Forechecked for 3 games this season. Passing is poor, forwards never open or never supporting each other. Just generally not very good about 80% of the time this season.

Even the young guns teams generated more offence and crashed the net more. I see a lot of guys that give up too easily or have given up altogether.

I checked briefly on natural stat trick. The flames aren’t appreciably better or worse than most teams with their amount of shots for at shooting wide.

Just looked at FF minus SF and that counts misses.

Also, I think the top 6 Ritchie experiment can be wrapped up, that’s not working. Get Lindholm back into the gato gang and get the top 6 rolling again.
