Even if he did the Flames didn’t have the cap space. They needed to replace Brodie which they did with Tanev and they went after Markstrom instead of a top end forward.
I couldn’t believe the deal he signed with the Habs. It looked like a team friendly deal immediately and early returns it is an absolute steal.

I’m not sure if that can be equated though. Many of these players are on taxi squad at one time, with constant rotation happening. We didn’t have the cap to sign a higher dollar figure contract.

Yeah most is those guys are league minimum so replacing them, even with ahl call ups, doesn’t create any room

Who cares? He is here to provide goals. Bit if you want to give him credit because Gaudreau has been awesome and made Mony some points have at it

Trade one of Backlund and Gio.
That will shake up the locker room.

As much as I want them both gone, I highly doubt there is a market for either one.

Trade Backlund and you can pretty much pencil yourself in as bottom 2 in the division.

Looks at standings. So in other words the team doesn't get much worse.

Taking a while to get to 5000

I would gladly endure (further) short term pain if it meant long term gain. I'm just not convinced it would.

Whats the difference with being bottom 2 or bottom 3? At least Ottawa has a pile of picks and some young players in place going forward. The Canucks do have some good young players who should ascend, even if their GM continues to find ways to screw up what could have been a successful rebuild.
The Canadian Division is not a very Good Division and the Flames are clearly one of the weaker teams in it. If that isn't telling you that you need to fix this thing I don't know what will. It's not just the upper roster, but there really are no good viable young players to try in the bottom 6 roles. Maybe Matthew Phillips, but I doubt he makes any difference.

Canadian division is likely the worst division in hockey. Only division that competes with it is the West this year.

Then make it happen.
Backlund would not be a difference maker on a contender and he isn't in Calgary either. If they need a culture change in the dressing room those two are the prime targets.
It would be the most Flames thing to do to keep Gio and Backlund and trade away Monahan and Gaudreau.

LOL, you said he had a lot of secondary assists. I simply corrected that.
Calm down guy.

Backlund is a integral part of the team overcoming this current slump, I think they may have been lost in my comment, I just assumed people would assume this.

I disagree, I think Backlund would be unbelievable on a contender and truly put them over the hump assuming they have top line talent.

Team has had a culture/consistency issue for years. For years, team has had a leadership group built on Giordano and Backlund.
...if we want things to change, there actually has to be change.

Backlund with the genius leadership move of headlocking a guy to the ice in the neutral zone for a penalty when the Flames had all the momentum last night. Lazy and stupid.

I don't think so, if there is actually a clash between Gio/Backlund and Tkachuk then you keep Tkachuk.
Even if there isn't a beef there, Gio and Backlund haven't been driving the team towards consistent performances. Clearly whatever mix the Flame have isn't working and at some point you go to cut bait.
