Yeah, because of course the way he was let go probably played no role in his reaction, and doing it differently wouldn't change anything!

The TSN 1040 thing is just such a kick in the nuts.

All the Bell Media cuts are nonsense. Bell hit up the Feds for a wage subsidy and pay their CEO $80MM a year, they haven't been harmed by the recession at all

Huh, weird. I would expect some of the $80 million to trickle down.

The argument is without the restrictions on telecomms, American companies would just swoop in, take over, and we’d be left without any good corporate office jobs, just the lowest level jobs. There’s probably also some consideration given to telecomms as strategic industries that shouldn’t be in the hands of foreign owners.
I hate Canada’s telecomms as much as anyone, and I don’t necessarily buy all that. But those are the arguments.

That really really really sucks seeing the entire TSN 1040 team fired. Absolutely awful. Price and Sekeres were/are the best in the business. Don Taylor is a good person who deserved better from Sportsnet and now TSN. The Sportsnet radio channel here sucks, it’s unlistenable.
I will say this though. The sports media landscape in Canada has been bad for a long time. They got complacent and were too afraid to change things. And by change things I mean they held on to guys like Nick Kypreos, Don Cherry, Bob the Moj Marjonovich etc way way way too long. Bringing in someone like Kevin Bieksa should have been done ages ago. It’s almost too late at this point as so many people had tuned out these dinosaurs long long ago. How long did Kypreos have a spot on national TV? Like ten years? That’s unbelievable for a guy that brought zero interesting insight into the game.

Oh, way longer than that wasn't it?
Sportsnet was always a #### show for who they had vs TSN.

And yet when Sportsnet was retooling they brought in Strombo, who asked the experts questions and sat back to let them answer. He didn't make the show about him but a lot of people raised a stink because he was too hipster, wore suits that were too tight etc., and pushed until the brought the dinosaur, backstabbing Ron MacLean back.
Sportsnet pre-game and intermissions are impossible to watch. I have watched Ron MacLean since his CKRD days in Red Deer and he was an obnoxious dick even back in the 70's.

Strombo was a huge mistake.
In the fact that I think they actually nailed it, but were unwilling to give him some time to grow into the role.
Ron Maclean. That guy is insufferable.
He's like a low-budget 'Gord Downie' knockoff.
Sorry Ron...you'll never be Gord Downie. Stop trying. Its insulting and more than a little sad.

I understand that it sucks but I can't help but wonder if this is the direction of media now. Is there really the same demand for local sports media from the general public. As soon as the demand decreases the advertising decreases and then it becomes more money to pay talent than it brings in.
It wasn't that long ago that in Calgary all of the sports coverage was Jock Wilson on 660CFR and Sports Talk on QR77. Especially when the world of sports shut down and the discussions became around what snacks are the best, I think that the market was hit a huge amount and I don't know if it will ever recover.

Strombo was terrible as a sports host and I love almost everything the guy has ever done other than HNIC.
Ron Maclean, as much as people don't like some of his opinions, is a far superior host in almost every way to what Strombo brought to the table.

I was a delivery driver around the Lower Mainland for several years while I was going to university. I'd listen to TSN1040 pretty much all day long. It was a comfort blanket so to speak. It felt like having company while I drove around by myself.
I've missed countless games, drafts, trade deadlines, and world juniors because of having to put in endless amounts of overtime. I caught it all on TSN1040 and insulted that moron Matt Sekeres in the confines of my Chevy van cabin numerous times.
Going to miss those guys. And I'm going to miss the TSN analysts more than anything. TSN has always had a professional quality about them that Sportsnet has never ever had.
God I had Canada's telecommunications corporations.

Ron Maclean is almost a caricature of a dorky Canadian pseudo-celeb that name drops guys like Jim Cuddy and Jeff Healy. It’s honestly embarrassing. It’s not 1993 anymore Ron, and no one cares that you know those people. Especially viewers younger than 40.
