Duclair represented himself out of Ottawa in 25 yo UFA status. So far so good I'd say.
NYR
ARI
CHI (swept by the Preds the year before, finished last in the central the year he was with them)
CBJ
OTT
In the span of his career, none of these organizations scream 'competence'. I'm sure Duclair hasn't handled his side perfectly either...few guys in the early 20s do.
My first instinct is that he ends up in SJ. The chemistry in their room was clearly off last year, so this would certainly shake things up.
BOS could make a lot of sense. BUF or NJD might pony up the most cash

How does it work with term in arbitration? The side who picks arbitration gets to decide one or two year term unless the player is only one year from UFA in which case it's one year?

Close.
The side that did not file for arbitration gets to choose 1 or 2 year unless the player is one year from UFA in which case it is automatically 1 year

I think racism plays a role in certain players’ “attitude” problems, but I also think a large part may be because they got a chip on their shoulder from treatment in junior or the minors (like Alieu). About 20 years ago there were big revelations about hazing in junior, and I’d bet that a minority player would get it worse in many cases.

Duclair seems like a nice guy, who knows. I know some team will probably pay a nice salary to him but I wouldn’t mind him on the third line. I’m not sure Ottawa’s credibility is that high when it comes to how they conduct themselves. Maybe it wasn’t Dorion. Because it involves ownership maybe Duclair pushed his demands and the best owner in the league said f him. We all know he can be petty.

I am curious though, if Ottawa and Duclair had gone to arbitration, would Duclair still have represented himself? I don't think a player has ever represented themselves in a NHL salary arbitration case
If Duclair managed to do and file all the paperwork and handle himself well in the hearing without anyone experienced helping him it would have been impressive.

That would be interesting but I imagine he may have a private lawyer file the paperwork for him or at least look it over. I imagine the 10% he’s saving from not having an agent allows him to take a little more give in what his demands are. Anyway, I don’t know SJ’s cap situation but I could also see them getting him.

I don't know about this one - I think Dorion made the right move here.
Says that he offered 'a substantial raise' - I wonder what that is, and how far apart they were. I wouldn't want to take a chance that the arbitrator awarded Duclair 4 million. He needs prime opportunity for that to happen.
I think there are a lot of players that end up posting good numbers when given a prime opportunity. If he gets pushed down - which isn't that unlikely given how much talent they have been drafting - is he going to produce at a 4 million rate on the 2nd or 3rd lines without PP1 - maybe without PP2 time? Doubtful.
I side with Dorian here unless I hear that Duclair wasn't asking for too much relative to his value. I wouldn't take the risk of a 4 million decision.

Agent fees are between 2-6%. But He’d be a fool to make his presentation unaided.

Agreed on them moving on from him but clearly someone got butthurt or they’d have dealt his rights for a low pick. My guess stands that Melnick got pissed.

Why would a team give up a pick to take on an arbitration risk when they can just try to land him for free on a contract they actually agree to?

I guess it comes down to price paid to acquire his rights. Say he garners a 6th round pick. They can wine and dine him and try to convince him that their offer is the best one out there. Especially if he’s representing himself. When he hits the open market he’s not the biggest fish and there’s a risk he may not get the money he expects.

It's a clear generalization. My father is white.
But there is a reason why black kids are taught to behave a certain way in white company.

Don't have to tell me. I support CPS more than most, but I work with black people that know you have to "be on your best behaviour in forest lawn and marlbourough, especially when you work early morning before rush hour". Those traffic stops aren't easy or quick and they mostly come without reason.

I always think of this article that I found eye-opening and educational.
Even as someone in the top percentile of hockey watching, I honestly never thought about why I seldom saw black centremen until reading this, even as someone fully familiar with the black QB situation. The paragraphs and table below on players in trades was startling.
Racial Bias in Drafting and Development: The NHL’s Black Quarterback Problem
At the professional level, hockey players are often expected to sacrifice their individualism for the sake of the team, and refrain from straying too far out of the pre-conceived norms of hockey culture. Those that do can be subject to ridicule and rebuke from both the team and the media. A player of color, particularly a visible minority who does not actively attempt to transform their persona into a more hockey culture appropriate one, may face adverse consequences as a result. Players such as Anthony Duclair, Josh Ho-Sang, and P.K. Subban serve as somber reminders of players who clashed with management for transgressions that seem relatively minor from the outside looking in before being moved or demoted. However, even top performers without any noted character concerns such as Wayne Simmonds and Seth Jones were traded by their drafting team.
To quantify the frequency of this occurrence, we looked at every player’s under 25 seasons since 2008 (using data from evolving-hockey.com), and identified whether or not they ended up playing for multiple NHL teams in that time frame. Breaking these numbers out by their ethnic categories, shows a stark difference in outcomes for Black players over any other group. Nearly half of the Black players in the data set (49%) ended up moving on from their original team by age 25, a rate nearly double that of White players.
Once again, it is hard to reconcile the stark difference in outcomes between the groups when the difference in on ice impacts are minimal at best (the average WAR of the moved players was roughly the same across all groups).
